The Catholic Church in New Zealand ( mi, Te Hāhi Katorika ki Aotearoa) is part of the worldwide Catholic Church under the leadership of the Pope in Rome, assisted by the Roman Curia, and with the New Zealand bishops. Catholicism was introduced to New Zealand in 1838 by missionaries from France, who converted Māori. As settlers from the British Isles arrived in New Zealand, many of them Irish Catholics, the Catholic Church became a settler church rather than a mission to Māori. Immacolata Al Tiburtino
The church of St. Mary Immaculate and St. John Berchmans is a place of Catholic worship in Rome, located in the Tiburtino district, in the Immaculate Square. History It was built by order of Pope Pius X between 1906 and 1909 on plans by Constantine Schneider, and was solemnly consecrated by the Archbishop of Malines, Cardinal Desire Mercier, 19 March 1909. It was also dedicated to John Berchmans, a Belgian Jesuit, as a sign of gratitude to the Belgian Catholics who had given a substantial economic contribution to the building up of the church. The church is home parish, erected by Pope Pius X on 12 March 1909 with the Apostolic Letter "In ordinandis", and entrusted to the Josephites of Murialdo. Edward Gaines
Edward Russell Gaines (3 November 1926 – 6 September 1994) was the Catholic Auxiliary Bishop of Auckland (1976–1981) and was the first bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Hamilton, New Zealand (1980–94). Born in Whanganui in 1926, Gaines received his secondary education at St. Peter's College, Epsom, conducted by the Christian Brothers. He then went on to study at Holy Name Seminary, Christchurch (operated by the Jesuit order) and Holy Cross College, Mosgiel (operated by the Vincentian order). Gaines was ordained a Catholic priest on 13 July 1950 by Archbishop James Liston at St Patrick's Cathedral, Auckland. Patrick Dunn (bishop)
Patrick James Dunn (born 5 February 1950) is a Catholic prelate. He was the 11th Bishop of Auckland, New Zealand from 1994 to 2021. Early life Dunn was born in London and is the eldest son of the late H. P. ("Pat") Dunn, a prominent Auckland obstetrician. Dunn was considerably influenced by his father and his mother, June Dunn, a former school teacher, in later deciding to become a priest and being appointed a bishop. He was educated at St Michael's School, Remuera, Sacred Heart College, Auckland, from 1961 to 1967, and the University of Auckland in 1968. He studied for the Catholic priesthood under the Jesuits at Holy Name Seminary, Christchurch from 1969 to 1970, and under the Vincentians at Holy Cross College, Mosgiel from 1971 to 1976. Charles Drennan
Charles Edward Drennan (born 23 August 1960 in Christchurch, New Zealand) is a former New Zealand Bishop. He was the second Bishop of Palmerston North, New Zealand, from 2012 to 2019. On 4 October 2019 he resigned his position. Two allegations of "unacceptable behaviour" of a sexual nature were made. An investigation by the Catholic Church's New Zealand Office for Professional Standards found that the behaviour was unacceptable for a Catholic bishop but not criminal in nature. The Society of Mary ( la, Societas Mariae) abbreviated SM, commonly known as the Marist Fathers, is a men's Roman Catholic clerical religious congregation of pontifical right. It was founded by Jean-Claude Colin and a group of seminarians in Lyon, France, in 1816. Michael Joseph Dooley (born 13 December 1961) is a New Zealand prelate of the Roman Catholic Church. He was appointed as the 7th Bishop of Dunedin, New Zealand on 22 February 2017, ordained bishop on 26 April 2018 and installed on 27 April 2018. Dooley was born in Invercargill, the son of Joseph Dooley and Mary Hogan. He was educated at Heddon Bush Primary School and Central Southland College, Winton. He completed an apprenticeship as a fitter and turner before studying for a Bachelor of Theology at Otago University while he was at Holy Cross Seminary, then located at Mosgiel. He then completed a Master of Theology at Melbourne College of Divinity. Dooley was an assistant priest at St. Mary's Basilica, Invercargill and at Gore. A coadjutor bishop (or bishop coadjutor) is a bishop in the Catholic, Anglican, and (historically) Eastern Orthodox churches whose main role is to assist the diocesan bishop in the administration of the diocese. The coadjutor (literally, "co-assister" in Latin) is a bishop himself, although he is also appointed as vicar general. The coadjutor bishop is, however, given authority beyond that ordinarily given to the vicar general, making him co-head of the diocese in all but ceremonial precedence. John Atcherley Dew (born 5 May 1948) is a Roman Catholic bishop. He is the sixth Roman Catholic Archbishop of Wellington and the Metropolitan of New Zealand, serving since 2005. He was also created a cardinal by Pope Francis in 2015. Background Dew was born in Waipawa, the son of George and Joan Dew. He has two sisters.
