Canadian Art
Canadian art refers to the visual (including painting, photography, and printmaking) as well as plastic arts (such as sculpture) originating from the geographical area of contemporary Canada. Art in Canada is marked by thousands of years of habitation by Indigenous peoples followed by waves of immigration which included artists of European origins and subsequently by artists with heritage from countries all around the world. The nature of Canadian art reflects these diverse origins, as artists have taken their traditions and adapted these influences to reflect the reality of their lives in Canada. Thunder Bay Historical Museum
The Thunder Bay Museum is located in Thunder Bay, Ontario. It is operated by the Thunder Bay Historical Museum Society, incorporated in 1972 as the successor to the Thunder Bay Historical Society. The Museum is affiliated with the Canadian Museums Association, the Canadian Heritage Information Network, the Ontario Historical Society, and Virtual Museum of Canada. History The Thunder Bay Historical Society was founded October 2, 1908 at the instance of Barlow Cumberland, president of the Ontario Historical Society. Peter McKellar served as president of the Thunder Bay Historical Society from 1908 to 1923. Since 1994 the museum has been housed in the former Fort William police station and court house near Thunder Bay City Hall. Robert Bateman (naturalist)
Robert McLellan Bateman (born 24 May 1930) is a Canadian naturalist and painter, born in Toronto, Ontario. Career Bateman was always interested in art, but never intended to make a living from it. He was fascinated by the natural world in his childhood; he recorded the sightings of all of the birds in the area of his house in Toronto and did small paintings with birds in their habitats. He found inspiration from the Group of Seven; later, he became interested in making abstract paintings of nature, strongly influenced by the work of Franz Kline. It was not until the mid-1960s that he changed to his present style, realism. In 1954, he graduated with a degree in geography from the Victoria College in the University of Toronto. Anne Meredith Barry
Anne Meredith Barry D.Litt. (August 31, 1932 – January 23, 2003) was a Canadian visual artist known for her landscapes of Newfoundland and Labrador. Her paintings and prints made use of bold colours and whimsical patterns, occasionally incorporating collage and handwritten text. Career Born in Toronto, Barry graduated from the Ontario College of Art (now known as OCAD University) in 1954 and began painting full time. Her work was included in the City of Montreal Art Exhibition in 1969. Barry first visited Newfoundland in 1971, when she spent the summer teaching children at Hibb's Cove, Conception Bay, through a residency with the Outport Arts Foundation. In subsequent years she continued to visit Newfoundland from her home in Toronto. Printmaking
Printmaking is the process of creating artworks by printing, normally on paper, but also on fabric, wood, metal, and other surfaces. "Traditional printmaking" normally covers only the process of creating prints using a hand processed technique, rather than a photographic reproduction of a visual artwork which would be printed using an electronic machine ( a printer); however, there is some cross-over between traditional and digital printmaking, including risograph. Except in the case of monotyping, all printmaking processes have the capacity to produce identical multiples of the same artwork, which is called a print. Each print produced is considered an "original" work of art, and is correctly referred to as an "impression", not a "copy" (that means a different print copying the first, common in early printmaking). Earl () is a rank of the nobility in the United Kingdom. The title originates in the Old English word ''eorl'', meaning "a man of noble birth or rank". The word is cognate with the Scandinavian form ''jarl'', and meant "chieftain", particularly a chieftain set to rule a territory in a king's stead. After the Norman Conquest, it became the equivalent of the continental count (in England in the earlier period, it was more akin to a duke; in Scotland, it assimilated the concept of mormaer). Unity Bainbridge
Unity Bainbridge (July 6, 1916 – November 30, 2017) was a Canadian artist and writer of poetry inspired by the indigenous peoples of the Pacific Northwest Coast and its landscape. Personal life Unity Bainbridge was born in Victoria, British Columbia. She was also known as Unity Bainbridge Brewster. Her parents were George P. and Deborah Bainbridge. Unity was the eldest of three sisters; her two younger sisters were Ursula Ridgeway and Monica Resnick. She had one daughter, Deborah Ryan. Her niece is Lynn Johnston the comic artist of For Better or For Worse Bainbridge married in 1946, moved to San Francisco, CA for five years, then moved back to British Columbia. She was a long-time resident of West Vancouver, British Columbia. She died there on November 30, 2017 at the age of 101. Frederic Marlett Bell-Smith
Frederic Marlett Bell-Smith (also known as F. M. Bell-Smith) (September 26, 1846 – June 23, 1923) was a Canadians, Canadian landscape painter known for his works of the Rocky Mountains and the Selkirk Range, Quebec and Maine. Early life Bell-Smith emigrated to Canada from England in 1866. He had studied painting in England at the South Kensington School of Art and worked as an artist and photographer in Montreal until 1871, when he moved to Toronto. Philip Aziz
Philip J.A.F. Aziz (April 15, 1923 – September 13, 2009) was a Canadian artist. He lived in London, Ontario, and was of Lebanese Greek Orthodox Christian descent. He was recognized for his work in the technique of egg tempera-en-gesso panel, a method popular during the Renaissance. Early years Aziz was born in St. Thomas, Ontario, before moving to London, Ontario, at an early age. He grew up in old South London and attended H.B. Beal Secondary School, enrolling in its arts program. Aziz graduated from Yale University with a Master of Fine Arts degree in 1949. He next travelled the world, living alternately in New York City and London, Ontario, where he resided in his now heritage-designated home, also the site of his studio and art gallery. Leo Ayotte
Leo Ayotte (October 10, 1909 – December 21, 1976) was a Canadian oil painter and artist. Early life Born in Sainte-Flore, Mauricie, Quebec to a family of modest means, he began his studies at the College Séraphique and at Trois-Rivières Seminary, and finally, in Nicolet. He abandoned his studies at the end of his rhetoric and began to compose poems and paint. In 1938, Ayotte moved to Montreal and worked as a model at the École des beaux-arts de Montréal and the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts. Not being registered, Ayotte could not follow the lessons, but his work there as a model and as a janitor allowed him to listen in on classes. Without money, he also picked up the half-empty tubes left by careless students and used them to paint.
