Cinema Of Canada
Cinema in Canada dates back to the earliest known display of film in Saint-Laurent, Quebec, in 1896. The film industry in Canada has been dominated by the United States, which has utilized Canada as a shooting location and to bypass British film quota laws, throughout its history. Canadian filmmakers, English and French, have been active in the development of cinema in the United States. Films by Thomas A. Edison, Inc. were some of the first to arrive in Canada and early films made in the country were produced by Edison Studios. Canadian Pacific Railway and other railways supported early filmmaking including James Freer, whose '' Ten Years in Manitoba'' was the first known film by a Canadian. ''Evangeline'' is the earliest recorded Canadian feature film. George Brownridge and Ernest Shipman were major figures in Canadian cinema in the 1920s and 1930s. Kate Taylor (novelist)
Katherine Mary Taylor (born 1962) is a French-born Canadian critic and novelist, a cultural journalist at ''The Globe and Mail'' newspaper. She is author of three novels, ''Mme Proust and the Kosher Kitchen,'' ''A Man in Uniform'' and ''Serial Monogamy''. Biography Katherine Mary Taylor as born in 1962 in Boulogne-Billancourt, France. The child of a Canadian diplomat, Taylor was born in France, and grew up both in Europe and in Ottawa. She attended Glebe Collegiate Institute in Ottawa, and studied history and art history at the University of Toronto. She has an M.A. in journalism from the University of Western Ontario in London, Ontario. After working at the ''London Free Press'' and the ''Hamilton Spectator'', Taylor joined the copy desk of ''The Globe and Mail'' in 1989. Tantoo Cardinal
Tantoo Cardinal CM (born Rose Marie Cardinal; July 20, 1950) is a Canadian actress of Cree and Métis heritage. In 2009, she was made a member of the Order of Canada "for her contributions to the growth and development of Aboriginal performing arts in Canada, as a screen and stage actress, and as a founding member of the Saskatchewan Native Theatre Company." Early life Rose Marie "Tantoo" Cardinal was born the youngest of three children to Julia Cardinal, a woman of Cree and Métis descent. Cardinal was raised in the hamlet of Anzac, Alberta. The lack of electricity inspired her to use her imagination while playing in the bush. Her grandmother nicknamed her "Tantoo" after the insect repellent they used while picking blueberries together. She taught Cardinal the Cree language, the traditional ways of their culture and the difficulties she would face growing up Métis in Canada. Angelique's Isle
''Angelique's Isle'' is a 2018 Canadian historical drama film, directed by Marie-Hélène Cousineau and Michelle Derosier. Based on a true story set in 1845, the film stars Julia Jones as Angelique Mott, an Anishinaabe woman who accompanies her voyageur husband Charlie (Charlie Carrick) on an expedition to search for potential mining sites during the Copper Rush, only for the couple to be abandoned on an island in Lake Superior and forced to survive the harsh winter on their own. The film's cast also includes Tantoo Cardinal, Aden Young, Stephen McHattie, Brendt Thomas Diabo, Greg Tremblay, Anthony Roch and Dennis Dubinsky. The film premiered at the Atlantic Film Festival in September 2018, before going into commercial release in 2019.
