Cinema in Canada dates back to the earliest known display of film in Saint-Laurent, Quebec, in 1896. The film industry in Canada has been dominated by the United States, which has utilized Canada as a shooting location and to bypass British film quota laws, throughout its history. Canadian filmmakers, English and French, have been active in the development of cinema in the United States. Films by Thomas A. Edison, Inc. were some of the first to arrive in Canada and early films made in the country were produced by Edison Studios. Canadian Pacific Railway and other railways supported early filmmaking including James Freer, whose '' Ten Years in Manitoba'' was the first known film by a Canadian. Penelope Corrin
Penelope Anne Corrin (born 28 November 1975) is a Canadian actress and writer. Corrin was born in Ottawa, Ontario. She was seen nationally on CBC Television's ''Royal Canadian Air Farce'' comedy broadcasts for nine years, originally as a replacement cast member while Jessica Holmes was on maternity leave in 2006. Like Holmes, she attended Canterbury High School in Ottawa, then studied drama at the University of British Columbia. Ricardo Antonio Hoyos, Jr. (born November 27, 1995) is a Canadian actor. Jamie Travis (born August 13, 1979) is a Toronto-based filmmaker who has written and directed award-winning short films, music videos and television commercials. He received international recognition for his two short film trilogies, ''The Patterns'' and ''The Saddest Children in the World''. ''The Armoire'' is a 2009 Canadian short drama film directed by Jamie Travis. The third film in his ''Saddest Children in the World'' trilogy following ''Why the Anderson Children Didn't Come to Dinner'' and '' The Saddest Boy in the World'', the film stars William Cuddy as Aaron, a young boy whose friend Tony (Ricardo Hoyos) has gone missing during a game of hide and seek, who is undergoing hypnosis to determine whether he can remember anything that may assist in locating Tony. Hiam Abbass ( ar, هيام عباس, he, היאם עבאס; born 30 November 1960), also Hiyam Abbas, is a Palestinian actress and film director. Personal life Hiam Abbass was born in Nazareth, Israel, to a Muslim Arab family. She was raised in the village of Deir Hanna. Nisreen Faour ( ar, نسرين فاعور; born August 2, 1972) is a Palestinian Israeli actress from the village of Ma'alot-Tarshiha, best known for her role as Muna in the 2009 American film, ''Amreeka''. Faour was born in Ma'alot-Tarshiha, Israel, and moved to the United States to study theater and performance when she was 16.
