Cinema in Canada dates back to the earliest known display of film in Saint-Laurent, Quebec, in 1896. The film industry in Canada has been dominated by the United States, which has utilized Canada as a shooting location and to bypass British film quota laws, throughout its history. Canadian filmmakers, English and French, have been active in the development of cinema in the United States. Films by Thomas A. Edison, Inc. were some of the first to arrive in Canada and early films made in the country were produced by Edison Studios. Canadian Pacific Railway and other railways supported early filmmaking including James Freer, whose '' Ten Years in Manitoba'' was the first known film by a Canadian. Charlotte L'Écuyer
Charlotte L'Écuyer (16 August 1943 – 1 February 2021) was a politician in Quebec, Canada. She was a Member of the National Assembly of Quebec (MNA) for the riding of Pontiac in Western Quebec, and a member of the Quebec Liberal Party caucus, from 2003 to 2014. Biography L'Écuyer went to the Université du Québec à Hull (now Université du Québec en Outaouais) and obtained a bachelor's degree in social work. She would later add a master's degree in social work at the Université de Sherbrooke. L'Écuyer was a social worker and the former general manager of the Pontiac's CLSC clinic. She was also an administration member for several health and social services associations in the Pontiac region. Rémy Girard (born August 10, 1950) is a Canadian actor and former television host from Montreal, Quebec. Acting career Girard played the role of Rémy, the main character, who is dying of terminal cancer, in the Canadian film ''The Barbarian Invasions'' (''Les Invasions barbares'') by director Denys Arcand. This film was awarded the 2003 Academy Award for best foreign picture. Charles Binamé
Charles Binamé (born May 25, 1949) is a Quebec director. He was born in Belgium and came to Montreal with his family at a young age. He joined the National Film Board of Canada as an assistant director in 1971, but soon left for the private sector. During the 1970s, he mostly directed documentaries for Quebec television, and in the 1980s he directed over 200 television commercials, including some in England. When he returned to Canada in the early 1990s, he directed two of Quebec's most popular television series of all time, ''Blanche'' (the sequel to the series ''Les Filles de Caleb'') and ''Marguerite Volant''. The former won him seven Prix Gémeaux and the FIPA d'Or at Cannes Film Festival for best drama series. Denis Côté (born November 16, 1973) is an independent filmmaker and producer living in Quebec, of Brayon origin. His experimental films have been shown at major film festivals around the world. Life and career Côté was born in Perth-Andover, New Brunswick, Canada. He studied film at Collège Ahuntsic in Montreal and founded nihilproductions around 1994. He made a number of short films, including ''Kosovolove'' (2000) and ''La sphatte'' (2003).
