Cinema in Canada dates back to the earliest known display of film in Saint-Laurent, Quebec, in 1896. The film industry in Canada has been dominated by the United States, which has utilized Canada as a shooting location and to bypass British film quota laws, throughout its history. Canadian filmmakers, English and French, have been active in the development of cinema in the United States. Films by Thomas A. Edison, Inc. were some of the first to arrive in Canada and early films made in the country were produced by Edison Studios. Canadian Pacific Railway and other railways supported early filmmaking including James Freer, whose '' Ten Years in Manitoba'' was the first known film by a Canadian. ''Evangeline'' is the earliest recorded Canadian feature film. George Brownridge and Ernest Shipman were major figures in Canadian cinema in the 1920s and 1930s. Kristoffer Tabori
Kristoffer Tabori (also known as K.T. Donaldson, born Christopher Donald Siegel; August 4, 1952) is an American actor and television director. Early life Tabori was born in Malibu, California, the son of American film director Don Siegel and Swedish-American actress Viveca Lindfors. He appeared in one of his mother's films, '' Weddings and Babies'', as a young boy. In 1995, they appeared together in ''Last Summer in the Hamptons''. His parents divorced in 1953 and Lindfors married Hungarian writer and director George Tabori. Kristoffer adopted his stepfather's surname and changed the English spelling of his forename. Jane McGregor (born 1983) is a Canadian actress, known for her roles in '' Slap Her... Bruce Sweeney (born in Sarnia, Ontario) is a Canadian film director. He has spent his career based primarily in Vancouver, British Columbia. Career Sweeney's debut film, '' Live Bait'', won the award for Best Canadian Feature Film at the 1995 Toronto International Film Festival. He won the 2002 Canadian Comedy Award for Pretty Funny Film Direction for the film ''Last Wedding''. The film also won the award for Best Canadian Film from the Toronto Film Critics Association. American Venus
''American Venus'' is a 2007 Canadian drama film directed by Bruce Sweeney and starring Rebecca De Mornay, Jane McGregor, and Matt Craven. Plot Jenna is a teenaged competitive skater who has been coached by her overprotective, high-strung, gun-obsessed mother Celia. When she quits competing and decides to go to college in Vancouver, her mother becomes very upset and tries to prevent her from leaving home; eventually locking her in a hot sauna until Jenna agrees to stay. Her father gives Jenna money behind her mother's back in order to help Jenna leave home. Her mother goes to Canada to force her to come back home. Once there, the mother becomes increasing unstable as she first tries to bring a handgun into Canada, tries to procure one from a drug dealer, and finally has sex with a policeman who gets a gun for her. Genie Award
The Genie Awards were given out annually by the Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television to recognize the best of Canadian cinema from 1980–2012. They succeeded the Canadian Film Awards (1949–1978; also known as the "Etrog Awards," for sculptor Sorel Etrog, who designed the statuette). Genie Award candidates were selected from submissions made by the owners of Canadian films or their representatives, based on the criteria laid out in the ''Genie Rules and Regulations'' booklet which is distributed to Academy members and industry members. Peer-group juries, assembled from volunteer members of the Academy, meet to screen the submissions and select a group of nominees. Academy members then vote on these nominations. In 2012, the Academy announced that the Genies would merge with its sister presentation for English-language television, the Gemini Awards, to form a new award presentation known as the Canadian Screen Awards. Vik Sahay
Vikram Sahay is a Canadian actor best known for playing Kevin Calvin on '' Radio Active'', Lester Patel on the NBC television series ''Chuck'', and Rama in the ''Roxy Hunter'' saga. Life and career Vik Sahay was born in Ottawa, Ontario, to Indian parents, and attended Canterbury High School of the Arts in Ottawa. He went on to study Theatre Performance at Montreal's Concordia University. He learned to perform Indian classical dance with his brother Sidharth Sahay. In 1986 and 1987, he appeared on three episodes of the children's television show ''You Can't Do That on Television.'' He was also featured in the television series '' Radio Active'', playing sportscaster Kevin Calvin.
