Cinema in Canada dates back to the earliest known display of film in Saint-Laurent, Quebec, in 1896. The film industry in Canada has been dominated by the United States, which has utilized Canada as a shooting location and to bypass British film quota laws, throughout its history. Canadian filmmakers, English and French, have been active in the development of cinema in the United States. Films by Thomas A. Edison, Inc. were some of the first to arrive in Canada and early films made in the country were produced by Edison Studios. Canadian Pacific Railway and other railways supported early filmmaking including James Freer, whose '' Ten Years in Manitoba'' was the first known film by a Canadian. Tim Southam (born October 1, 1961) is a Canadian television and film director. Career Tim Southam’s directing work includes Canadian films and international series. His 1994 dance film ''Satie and Suzanne'', which he also wrote, evokes Erik Satie's relationship with the painter Suzanne Valadon. ''The Bay of Love and Sorrows'' is a 1998 novel by David Adams Richards. Background Like many of Richards's books, ''The Bay of Love and Sorrows'' is set during the 1970s; the book was in part inspired by his experiences growing up then in New Brunswick. Richards told the '' Edmonton Journal'' that the book was about "how children get manipulated, often by other children... how easy it is to be manipulated as a child." The first printing of the novel sold out before it was released. Plot Set in rural New Brunswick, Canada in 1974, the novel follows protagonist Michael Skid, the privileged son of the town judge. Michael Mackenzie works in film, theatre and technology policy. He has directed two feature films, both theatrically released in Canada. His plays have been staged in Europe and North America and variously published in English, French, German and Hungarian.
