Cinema in Canada dates back to the earliest known display of film in Saint-Laurent, Quebec, in 1896. The film industry in Canada has been dominated by the United States, which has utilized Canada as a shooting location and to bypass British film quota laws, throughout its history. Canadian filmmakers, English and French, have been active in the development of cinema in the United States. Films by Thomas A. Edison, Inc. were some of the first to arrive in Canada and early films made in the country were produced by Edison Studios. Canadian Pacific Railway and other railways supported early filmmaking including James Freer, whose '' Ten Years in Manitoba'' was the first known film by a Canadian. Academy Award For Animated Short Film
The Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film is an award given by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) as part of the annual Academy Awards, or Oscars, since the 5th Academy Awards (with different names), covering the year 1931–32, to the present. From 1932 until 1970, the category was known as Short Subjects, Cartoons; and from 1971 to 1973 as Short Subjects, Animated Films. The present title began with the 46th Awards in 1974. During the first 5 decades of the award's existence, awards were presented to the producers of the shorts. Current Academy rules, however, call for the award to be presented to "the individual person most directly responsible for the concept and the creative execution of the film." Richard Condie
Richard Condie, (born 1942) is a Canadian animator, filmmaker, musician and voice actor. Condie is best known for his 1985 animated short ''The Big Snit'' at the National Film Board of Canada and has won six international awards for ''Getting Started'' in 1979. Condie lives and works in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Education and career Born in Vancouver, British Columbia, Condie moved to Winnipeg at the age of four. There he attended Kelvin High School, graduating in 1961. He received his Bachelor of Arts in sociology from the University of Manitoba in 1967. Prior to entering the animation field, he worked periodic stints as a musician for the Manitoba Theatre Centre and CBC TV from 1964 to 1965. In 1967 Condie moved to Vancouver where he worked as a sociologist at the University of British Columbia. The Big Snit
''The Big Snit'' is a 1985 animated short film written and directed by Richard Condie and produced by the National Film Board of Canada. Plot A married couple plays a game of Scrabble that has stalemated as the husband is unable to come up with a word. The two go their separate ways; he watches his favourite TV show, "Sawing for Teens," while his wife works on cleaning the house. While the husband dozes off, "Sawing for Teens" is interrupted by the emergency warning: a severe worldwide nuclear war has broken out, and the cat severs the TV's electrical cord. As the husband awakens, he looks out the window to see that the streets have descended into chaos, and he returns to the game board, unaware of the global cataclysm, and sneaking a peek at his wife's letters. The wife, finished with her cleaning and also oblivious, catches him in the act, which he denies. Mort Ransen
Mort Ransen (August 16, 1933 – September 4, 2021) was a Canadian film and television director and screenwriter, best known for his Genie Award-winning 1995 film ''Margaret's Museum''. Ransen was born in Montreal, Quebec, and was educated at the High School of Montreal. He began his career as an actor and theatre director, later becoming a director and producer of documentary films for the National Film Board. He later left the NFB to work on his first dramatic feature film, ''Bayo''. He has also directed television, including an episode of '' Street Legal'' and three films in the '' Shades of Love'' series of romance films. Ransen was a nominee for Best Director, and winner of Best Screenplay with his cowriter Gerald Wexler, at the 16th Genie Awards for ''Margaret's Museum''. Due to the effects of dementia, Ransen chose to die with medical assistance in Salt Spring Island, British Columbia on September 4, 2021. ''Bayo'' is a 1985 Canadian drama film, directed by Mort Ransen and written by Ransen, Terry Ryan, and Arnie Gelbart. The film stars Ed McNamara, Patricia Phillips, Stephan McGrath, Hugh Webster, Cedric Smith, Patrick Lane, and Maisie Rillie. Set in Tickle Cove, Newfoundland and Labrador, the film focuses on the relationship of Bayo (McGrath), a young boy living with his single parent Sharon (Phillips). When Sharon's long-estranged father Phillip (McNamara) returns, Bayo's fascination with his grandfather threatens to upend Sharon's plan to move to Toronto. Artie Shaw
Artie Shaw (born Arthur Jacob Arshawsky; May 23, 1910 – December 30, 2004) was an American clarinetist, composer, bandleader, actor and author of both fiction and non-fiction. Widely regarded as "one of jazz's finest clarinetists", Shaw led one of the United States' most popular big bands in the late 1930s through the early 1940s. Though he had numerous hit records, he was perhaps best known for his 1938 recording of Cole Porter's "Begin the Beguine." Before the release of "Beguine," Shaw and his fledgling band had languished in relative obscurity for over two years and, after its release, he became a major pop artist within short order. The record eventually became one of the era's defining recordings.
