Cinema in Canada dates back to the earliest known display of film in Saint-Laurent, Quebec, in 1896. The film industry in Canada has been dominated by the United States, which has utilized Canada as a shooting location and to bypass British film quota laws, throughout its history. Canadian filmmakers, English and French, have been active in the development of cinema in the United States. Films by Thomas A. Edison, Inc. were some of the first to arrive in Canada and early films made in the country were produced by Edison Studios. Canadian Pacific Railway and other railways supported early filmmaking including James Freer, whose '' Ten Years in Manitoba'' was the first known film by a Canadian. Kenneth Welsh
Kenneth Welsh, (March 30, 1942 – May 5, 2022) was a Canadian film and television actor. He was best known as the multi-faceted villain Windom Earle in ''Twin Peaks'', for his roles in the films ''The Day After Tomorrow'', '' Adoration'', ''Survival of the Dead'', and, as the father of Katharine Hepburn (portrayed by Cate Blanchett), in Martin Scorsese's '' The Aviator''. Early life Welsh was born in Edmonton, Alberta, to a father who worked for the Canadian National Railway. He grew up in Alberta and studied drama at school. He later moved to Montreal and attended the National Theatre School. Following graduation, he auditioned for the Stratford Festival in Ontario and then spent the first seven years of his career on stage. Don Stroud
Donald Lee Stroud (born September 1, 1943) is an American actor, musician, and surfer. Stroud has appeared in over 100 films and 200 television shows. Early years Stroud was the son of vaudeville actor Clarence Stroud (of "The Stroud Twins" team) and singer Ann McCormack. He was born and raised in Honolulu, Hawaii by his mother and stepfather, Paul Livermore. At the age of 16, Stroud earned a black belt in the Hawaiian martial art of Kajukenbo. Stroud began surfing at the age of 3. As a surfer, he taught surfing while he was still in high school. In 1960 at the age of 17, Stroud won the Mākaha Junior Championship, and placed fourth overall in the Duke Kahanamoku International event. William Fruet
William Fruet (born January 1, 1933) is a Canadian film and television director, playwright and screenwriter. He made his directorial debut with the drama ''Wedding in White'' (1972), based on a play he had also written. The film won Best Picture at the Canadian Film Awards in 1973. His later career included several horror films, including ''Death Weekend'' (1972), ''Funeral Home (1980 film), Cries in the Night'' (1980), and ''Killer Party'' (1986), as well as television series, including ''Goosebumps (TV series), Goosebumps'' and ''Poltergeist: The Legacy''. ''Death Weekend'' (released in the USA under the title ''The House by the Lake'') is a 1976 Canadian horror/thriller film. It stars Brenda Vaccaro and Don Stroud and was one of the first films from Canadian director William Fruet. The low-budget production was shot in rural Canada and at a studio in Kleinburg, Ontario, Canada. In 2019, the film got a Blu-ray release from Germany. The VHS was seized and confiscated in the UK under Section 3 of the Obscene Publications Act 1959 during the video nasty panic. Georges-Henri Denys Arcand (; born June 25, 1941) is a French Canadian film director, screenwriter and producer. His film ''The Barbarian Invasions'' won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Film in 2004. ''Cotton Mill, Treadmill'' (french: On est au coton) is a documentary film directed by Denys Arcand, about the conditions of workers in the textile industry in Quebec. Despite being made in 1970, the film was held back by the National Film Board of Canada for political reasons, and not released to the general public until 1976. Production The film, then titled as ''Les informateurs'', was approved by the French Programme Committee in 1969. It was initially produced by Guy Coté, but was replaced by Pierre Maheu and Maheu handed control over to Marc Beaudet when the film was being edited. The director of French production, Jacques Godbout, was replaced by Gilles Dignard during the production of the film. Canadian Film Award
The Canadian Film Awards were the leading Canadian cinema awards from 1949 until 1978. These honours were conducted annually, except in 1974 when a number of Quebec directors withdrew their participation and prompted a cancellation. In the 1970s they were also sometimes known as the Etrog Awards for sculptor Sorel Etrog, who designed the statuette.
