Cinema Of Canada
Cinema in Canada dates back to the earliest known display of film in Saint-Laurent, Quebec, in 1896. The film industry in Canada has been dominated by the United States, which has utilized Canada as a shooting location and to bypass British film quota laws, throughout its history. Canadian filmmakers, English and French, have been active in the development of cinema in the United States. Films by Thomas A. Edison, Inc. were some of the first to arrive in Canada and early films made in the country were produced by Edison Studios. Canadian Pacific Railway and other railways supported early filmmaking including James Freer, whose '' Ten Years in Manitoba'' was the first known film by a Canadian. Denis Héroux
Denis Héroux, (; July 15, 1940 – December 10, 2015) was a Canadian film director and producer. Biography Born in Montreal, Quebec, he was the older brother of prolific Quebec film and television producer Claude Héroux. Héroux wanted to become a teacher when he collaborated with Denys Arcand and Stéphane Venne on the 1962 film about life as a student, '' Alone or with Others (Seul ou avec d’autres)''. That year he went on to become a teacher and for the next six years, in addition to teaching, he also wrote two history books and continued to direct. By the late 1960s Héroux had become one of the most successful independent filmmakers with hits like 1968's ''Valérie'' and '' Here and Now (L'Initiation)'' in 1970. ''Ilsa, She Wolf of the SS'' is a 1975 Canadian exploitation film about Ilsa, a sadistic and sexually voracious Nazi prison camp commandant. The film is directed by American filmmaker Don Edmonds and produced by David F. Friedman for Cinépix Film Properties in Montreal. The film stars Dyanne Thorne in the titular role, who is loosely based on Ilse Koch, a convicted war criminal and overseer at the Buchenwald concentration camp. Upon its release in early 1975, the film was immediately met with widespread controversy and critical derision, with Gene Siskel calling it "the most degenerate picture I have seen to play downtown". Particular criticism was directed at the film's graphic violence; which includes depictions of castration, flogging, human experimentation, and many other forms of torture. Gabriel Arcand
Gabriel Arcand (born June 4, 1949) is a Canadian actor. He is the brother of film director Denys Arcand. After studying philosophy at McGill University, Arcand spent his formative professional years at La Criée in Marseilles, France, and later in Poland where he studied theatre. Since he made his 1973 screen debut in his brother's first feature, '' La Maudite Galette'', he established himself as Quebec’s iconic strong, silent type and has given subtle but powerful performances in a wide range of films such as ''Réjeanne Padovani'', ''Les Plouffe'', ''Le Crime d’Ovide Plouffe'', ''Le Déclin de l’empire américain'', ''Post Mortem'' and Congorama. Céline Lomez
Céline Lomez (born 11 May 1953) is a Canadian actress and singer. Lomez started her show business career singing French-Canadian pop songs with her sister Liette, and the two gained popularity after their performance at the ''Festival du Disque'' in Quebec in 1968. Liette went on to join a trio called Toulouse. Lomez, however, was soon offered a role in the Denis Héroux film '' Here and Now'' (L'Initiation) (1970). She was only 15 years old at the time. She has also released two albums. One of her main hit songs was "L'amour dans les rangs de coton" (1974), a Louisiana zydeco-style ballad. She went on to play Christopher Plummer's ill-fated girlfriend in the cult thriller ''The Silent Partner'' in 1978. Georges-Henri Denys Arcand (; born June 25, 1941) is a French Canadian film director, screenwriter and producer. His film ''The Barbarian Invasions'' won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Film in 2004. His films have also been nominated three further times, including two nominations in the same category for ''The Decline of the American Empire'' in 1986 and ''Jesus of Montreal'' in 1989, becoming the only French-Canadian director in history whose films have received this number of nominations and, subsequently, to have a film win the award. Yelizaveta Nikolaevna Kedrova (Russian: Елизавета Николаевна Кедрова; 9 October 1909 – 16 February 2000), known as Lila Kedrova, was a Russian-born French actress.
