Cambodia
Cambodia (; also Kampuchea ; km, កម្ពុជា, UNGEGN: ), officially the Kingdom of Cambodia, is a country located in the southern portion of the Indochinese Peninsula in Southeast Asia, spanning an area of , bordered by Thailand to the northwest, Laos to the north, Vietnam to the east, and the Gulf of Thailand to the southwest. The capital and largest city is Phnom Penh. The sovereign state of Cambodia has a population of over 17 million. Buddhism is enshrined in the constitution as the official state religion, and is practised by more than 97% of the population. Cambodia's minority groups include Vietnamese, Chinese, Chams and 30 hill tribes. Cheng Heng
Cheng Heng ( km, ឆេង ហេង, 10 January 1917 – 15 March 1996) was a Cambodian politician, who was the country's Head of State from 1970–1972, and was a relatively prominent political figure during the Khmer Republic period (1970–1975). Early life Heng was born into an ethnic Chinese family in Takéo. He went on to become a prosperous businessman and landowner. Haing S
Haing Somnang Ngor ( Khmer: ហាំង សំណាង ង៉ោ; ; March 22, 1940 – February 25, 1996) was a Cambodian American gynecologist, obstetrician, actor and author. He is best remembered for winning the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor in 1985 for his debut performance in the film ''The Killing Fields'' (1984), in which he portrayed Cambodian journalist and refugee Dith Pran. He was murdered in a robbery outside his home in Los Angeles in 1996. Ngor is the only actor of Asian descent to win an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. He survived three terms in Cambodian prison camps, using his medical knowledge to keep himself alive by eating beetles, termites, and scorpions; he eventually crawled between Khmer Rouge and Vietnamese lines to safety in a Red Cross refugee camp. Geraldine Cox
Geraldine Dorothea Cox (born ) is the founder of Sunrise Cambodia, a charity that was originally established as an orphanage in the province of Kandal, in Cambodia, and now extends its services to sustainable development and family support in several provinces of the country. She was granted Cambodian citizenship by a royal decree from King Norodom Sihanouk in 1999, around the time that she founded the orphanage. Cox remained at the helm of Sunrise Cambodia until September 2022, when she handed over to ABC journalist Tracey Shelton. Eh Phuthong
Eh Phuthong ( km, អេ ភូថង; also spelled Ei Phouthang; born 1975) is a retired Cambodian professional kickboxer and former reality TV host of Khmer and Chinese descent. Born in Mondol Seima district, Koh Kong province, Cambodia, Eh Phuthong currently lives in Phnom Penh. He has a father name Yem Lim and a mother named At Uth. He also has a brother and a sister. Eh Phuthong began learning Kun Khmer, traditional Khmer kickboxing at age twelve with Mr. Yuth Phuthong in the 1980s, who then held the position of Prey Veng provincial governor and now, Koh Kong Province governor. Dith Pran
Dith Pran ( km, ឌិត ប្រន; 23 September 1942 – 30 March 2008) was a Cambodian photojournalist. He was a refugee and survivor of the Cambodian genocide and the subject of the film ''The Killing Fields'' (1984). Early life Dith was born in Siem Reap, Cambodia near Angkor Wat. His father worked as a public works official. He learned French at school and taught himself English. The United States Army hired him as a translator but after his ties with the United States were severed, Dith worked with a British film crew for the film ''Lord Jim'' and then as a hotel receptionist. Dien Del
General Dien Del (1932 - February 13, 2013) was a prominent Cambodian military officer and later, politician. He directed combat operations in Cambodia, first as a general in the Army of the Khmer Republic (1970–1975) and then as a leader of Khmer People's National Liberation Front (KPNLF) guerrilla forces fighting against the Vietnamese occupation (1979–1992). Following Vietnam's withdrawal from Cambodia in 1990, he presided over the demobilization of the KPNLF's armed forces in February 1992. In 1998 he was elected to the National Legislative Assembly as a member of FUNCINPEC. He spent the last fifteen years of his career as advisor to the Cambodian government. Chuon Nath
Chuon Nath ( km, ជួន ណាត; 11 March 1883 – 25 September 1969) was a Cambodian monk and the late ''Gana Mahanikaya'' Supreme Patriarch of Cambodia.
