American Football
American football (referred to simply as football in the United States and Canada), also known as gridiron, is a team sport played by two teams of eleven players on a rectangular field with goalposts at each end. The offense, the team with possession of the oval-shaped football, attempts to advance down the field by running with the ball or passing it, while the defense, the team without possession of the ball, aims to stop the offense's advance and to take control of the ball for themselves. The offense must advance at least ten yards in four downs or plays; if they fail, they turn over the football to the defense, but if they succeed, they are given a new set of four downs to continue the drive. William Ellis Atkins (November 19, 1934 – November 5, 1991) was an American football defensive back and punter from Auburn University who played for the San Francisco 49ers in the National Football League, and in the American Football League for the Buffalo Bills, the New York Titans/Jets, and the Denver Broncos. He was an AFL All-Star in 1961. On January 8, 1966, Atkins was named the head coach of the Troy State Trojans football team. In 1968, he coached Troy State to an NAIA National Championship and was named the NAIA Coach of the Year. Atkins finished at Troy State with a 44–16–2 record before leaving in 1971. He is the second-most winningest coach in Troy history, only behind Larry Blakeney. John Armstrong (American Football)
John Earl Armstrong (born July 7, 1963) is a former professional American football defensive back who played with the Buffalo Bills of the National Football League (NFL) in 1987. Armstrong played multiple positions for the Bruce High School football team, as well as basketball and track and field, before going on to Northwest Mississippi Community College. There he earned junior college All-American status as the team won a national junior college championship. After two years, he joined the football team of the University of Richmond, where he majored in physical education. He became a starting cornerback during his senior year in 1985 and ranked among the top punt and kickoff returners in the country. In the 1986 NFL Draft, Armstrong was drafted by the Minnesota Vikings in the 11th round. He was released from the team on August 19. Justin Armour
Justin Hugh Armour (born January 1, 1973) is a former professional American football player who played wide receiver for three seasons for the Buffalo Bills, Denver Broncos, and Baltimore Ravens. He is also the former head coach of the Manitou Springs High School football team in Manitou Springs, Colorado, along with being the current girls' basketball head coach. High School Justin was a Consensus All-American with the Manitou Springs Mustangs. In high school, he helped the Mustangs to a AA state track and field championship in the spring of 1990 and a AAA state championship in the fall of 1990. Jacob Bruce Arians (born January 26, 1978) is a former American football placekicker in the National Football League. He played college football at UAB. Arians spent less than one season as the field goal kicker for the Buffalo Bills in 2001, signing with the team as an undrafted free agent that summer to replace longtime kicker Steve Christie, who was among the numerous players who joined the San Diego Chargers in the "Bills West" exodus. He did not handle kickoffs, which were handled by punter Brian Moorman. Arians beat out Jay Taylor for the open position.
