List Of British Recipients Of The Légion D'Honneur For The Crimean War
The Légion d'Honneur was awarded to 746 members of the British Armed Forces during the Crimean War (also known as the Russian War) which lasted from 1854 to 1856. Prior to the Crimean War there was no precedent of a mass exchange of awards between allied nations. George Robert Barker
Brigadier-General Sir George Robert Barker KCB (9 February 1817''England, Select Births and Christenings, 1538–1975'' – 27 July 1861) was a British soldier. Born in London, he was the youngest son of John Barker, a former deputy-storekeeper general in HM Treasury. Barker was educated at the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich and joined the Royal Artillery in 1834. After the Crimean War in 1855 he was promoted to brevet-colonel. Barker was present at the Siege of Lucknow, commanding the British artillery and then captured the fort of Birwa. He was awarded a Knight of the Order of the Bath in 1859 for his distinguished services during the Indian Mutiny. In 1852 he married Mary Ann, daughter of Walter George Stewart of Spanish Town, in Jamaica. They had two sons, John Stewart Barker (1853) and Walter George Barker (1857). Commodore William Farquharson Burnett, (1815 – 7 February 1863) was a senior officer in the Royal Navy. Naval career Burnett was appointed a lieutenant in the Royal Navy in 1838. Promoted to captain in 1854, he commanded ''Tortoise'' at Ascension. He served as Governor of Ascension from 1858 until 1861. John Fox Burgoyne
Field Marshal Sir John Fox Burgoyne, 1st Baronet, (24 July 1782 – 7 October 1871) was a British Army officer. After taking part in the Siege of Malta during the French Revolutionary Wars, he saw action under Sir John Moore and then under the Duke of Wellington in numerous battles of the Peninsular War, including the Siege of Badajoz and the Battle of Vitoria. He served under Sir Edward Pakenham as chief engineer during the War of 1812. He went on to act as official advisor to Lord Raglan during the Crimean War advocating the Bay of Kalamita as the point of disembarkation for allied forces and recommending a Siege of Sevastopol from the south side rather than a coup de main, so consigning the allied forces to a winter in the field in 1854. Hugh Talbot Burgoyne
Captain Hugh Talbot Burgoyne VC (17 July 1833 – 7 September 1870) was an Irish recipient of the Victoria Cross. Born in Dublin, he was the son of John Fox Burgoyne and the grandson of John Burgoyne. Burgoyne was a 21-year-old Royal Navy lieutenant, serving in the Crimean War when he performed the deed for which he was awarded the VC. George Buller
General Sir George Buller (1802 – 12 April 1884) was an English general officer of the British Army who served in the Rifle Brigade and as a commander of a brigade in the Crimean War. George Bingham, 3rd Earl Of Lucan
George Charles Bingham, 3rd Earl of Lucan, (16 April 1800 – 10 November 1888), styled Lord Bingham before 1839, was an Anglo-Irish aristocrat and British Army officer. He was one of three men, along with Captain Nolan and Lord Raglan, responsible for the fateful order during the Battle of Balaclava in October 1854 that led to the Light Brigade commander, The Earl of Cardigan, leading the Charge of the Light Brigade. Michael Biddulph (British Army Officer)
General Sir Michael Anthony Shrapnel Biddulph (30 July 1823 – 23 July 1904) was a British Army officer who became Black Rod, a parliamentary official. Military career Educated at the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich, Biddulph was commissioned into the Royal Artillery in 1843. General Sir Henry John William Bentinck KCB (8 September 1796 – 29 September 1878) was a British soldier and courtier. Background He was the third and youngest son of Major-General John Charles Bentinck and his wife Jemima Helena, eldest daughter of Frederick de Ginkell, 6th Earl of Athlone. His older brothers were the generals William Bentinck, 3rd Count Bentinck and Charles Bentinck, 4th Count Bentinck.
