British Cypriots
The British Cypriot community in the United Kingdom consists of British people born on, or with ancestors from, the Eastern Mediterranean island of Cyprus. British Cypriot people may be of Greek-, Turkish-, Lebanese- Maronite-, or Armenian-Cypriot descent. Migration from Cyprus to the UK has occurred in part due to the colonial links between the countries and the internal conflict that followed Cyprus' independence from the British Empire in 1960. Migration peaked at the time of independence but has continued on a smaller scale. The number of Cypriot-born people in the UK fell between the 1991 and 2001 censuses, but the community, including people of Cypriot ancestry, remains sizeable, and the Cypriot-born population grew slightly between the 2001 and 2011 censuses. Stephen Constantine
Stephen Constantine (born 16 October 1962) is an English professional football coach and former player who is head coach of Indian Super League club East Bengal. Early and personal life Constantine was born on 16 October 1962 in London. He is of Greek-Cypriot descent. He is a fan of English club Arsenal. Constantine is married with three daughters; his family were living in Cyprus while he was coaching in Sudan. Playing career Constantine played in the United States for the Pennsylvania Stoners and the New York Pancyprian-Freedoms. He retired from playing at the age of 26, following a serious knee injury. Barry Evangeli is a British-Greek Cypriot record producer, who has produced records for such artists as Gloria Gaynor (''I Wish You Love'' CD) and the ''Divine Record Album Collection''. He was the Executive Officer for Proto Records, an independent British record label with guaranteed distribution deals. At the time a young Pete Waterman was based out of the business. Proto at one time had considerable success with its sole exclusive artist, Hazell Dean. In 1984 Proto Records called upon Mike Stock, Matt Aitken and Pete Ware, a keyboard player, to write and produce the song " Anna Maria Lena" which would be the entry for Cyprus during the Eurovision Song Contest 1984 in Luxembourg. Sapphire Chrystalla Elia (born 15 April 1987) is an English actress, model and singer best known for her roles in musical drama ''Britannia High'' and the soap opera ''Emmerdale''. Christopher David Dicomidis (born 14 September 1985) is a rugby union player for Pontypridd RFC in the Principality Premiership, and for the Cyprus national team. Born in Pencoed, Dicomidis progressed through the junior teams of Pencoed RFC, before joining the junior side of Cardiff RFC – Cardiff Junior Blue & Blacks before it disbanded at Under 15's level and moved to Old Penarthians RFC. Jason Demetriou ( el, Τζέισον Δημητρίου; born 18 November 1987) is a Cypriot international footballer who plays as a defender for Southend United. In October 2021, Demetriou also took temporary charge of the Southend first team as interim head coach. Career Leyton Orient Demetriou came through the youth ranks at English club Leyton Orient and signed his first full professional contract with the team in July 2006. He made his league debut in November 2006 when he came off the bench in a 0–0 draw with Yeovil Town. Charidimos (Harry) Demetriou (born 20 August 1958 in London) is a Greek Cypriot-British poker player. World Series of Poker Demetriou first became known in poker circles for his 3rd-place finish at the $2,000 no limit Texas hold 'em tournament at the 2002 World Series of Poker (WSOP) won by Layne Flack. Costadinos Contostavlos (Greek: Κωνσταντίνος Κοντόσταυλος; born 11 June 1987), better known by his stage name Dappy, is a British rapper and singer. Memnos Costi (born 14 August 1976) is a deaf English television presenter and football player. He is a presenter on the deaf magazine programme '' See Hear''. Biography Personal life Costi was born in England to Greek Cypriot parents, and grew up in Tottenham. He has been deaf since birth.
