List Of British Flyweight Boxing Champions
List of British flyweight boxing champions is a table showing the boxers who have won the British flyweight title. The title has been sanctioned by the National Sporting Club since 1909, and later by its replacement British Boxing Board of Control (BBBoC) since 1929. A champion may retire or voluntarily relinquish the title in order to fight for a higher-ranked championship. Where the date on which a champion relinquished the title is unclear, the date of the last BBBoC sanctioned fight is shown. r–Champion relinquished title. s–Champion stripped of title. Boxing (also known as "Western boxing" or "pugilism") is a combat sport in which two people, usually wearing protective gloves and other protective equipment such as hand wraps and mouthguards, throw punches at each other for a predetermined amount of time in a boxing ring. Terry Allen (boxer)
Terry Allen (8 June 1924 – 8 April 1987) was an English flyweight boxer. During his career, he became British, Commonwealth, European and World flyweight champion. Family Born in Islington, London, Allen's father was a professional boxer. His mother died when he was two, and he was raised by his grandmother. Six of his cousins were also professional boxers. Amateur career He started boxing when he was nine and won a schoolboy championship. During his amateur career, he won 102 out of 107 contests. Patrick "Pat" Clinton (born 4 April 1964) Was a Scottish former professional boxer who competed from 1985 to 1994. He held the WBO flyweight title from 1992 to 1993. Dave McAuley
David Anthony McAuley, MBE (born 15 June 1961, Larne) is a former professional boxer from Northern Ireland who competed from 1983 to 1992. He held the IBF flyweight title from 1989 to 1992 and challenged twice for the WBA flyweight title, in 1987 and 1988. At regional level, he held the British flyweight title in 1986. Boxing career McAuley fought under the name Dave "Boy" McAuley and was one of the last Irish boxers to fight for a world title over 15 rounds. His two bouts with Fidel Bassa of Colombia were each voted "Fight of the Year", in 1986 and 1987 respectively. He is a three-weight world champion, having held the IBF flyweight title from 1988 to 1989; the WBO bantamweight title from 1991 to 1992; and the WBO junior-featherweight title from 1992 to 1993. Kelvin Smart
Kelvin Smart (born 12 December 1960) is a Welsh former professional boxer who competed from 1979 to 1987. He held the British flyweight title from 1982 to 1984. Boxing career Smart began his boxing career as a promising amateur, fighting out of the Wingfield Amateur Boxing Club based in his home town of Caerphilly. In 1979 he entered the ABA Championships held at Wembley Arena in London. He reached the final where he lost to Ray Gilbody, who would later become the British bantamweight champion. Walter McGowan
Walter McGowan, MBE (13 October 1942 – 15 February 2016), was a Scottish boxer born in Hamilton, South Lanarkshire. He was known for having been the world flyweight champion (Lineal champion. Recognized by European Boxing Union, British Boxing Board of Control and ''The Ring''). He was the son of Thomas McGowan, who had boxed under the name of "Joe Gans". He was a skillful boxer, who showed brilliant footwork and knew how to use the ring. However, he suffered throughout his career with cuts, often having fights stopped despite being ahead on points. Jackie Brown (2 March 1935 — 12 January 2020) was a Scottish flyweight boxer who was a British and Commonwealth flyweight champion. He was born in Edinburgh, Scotland. Amateur career Brown won the 1958 Amateur Boxing Association British flyweight title, when boxing out of the Leith Victoria ABC. Professional career Brown had his first professional fight on 16 October 1958, in Paisley, defeating Mark Quinn in the third round on a technical knockout. John Caldwell (boxer)
John Caldwell (7 May 1938 in Belfast – 10 July 2009) was an Irish boxer who won the bronze medal in the flyweight (– 51 kg) division at the 1956 Summer Olympics in Melbourne. Caldwell was considered a supreme fighter whose class and skill saw him claim a medal in 1956 and the world bantamweight crown in 1961.
