Bobsleigh or bobsled is a team winter sport that involves making timed runs down narrow, twisting, banked, iced tracks in a gravity-powered sleigh. International bobsleigh competitions are governed by the International Bobsleigh and Skeleton Federation, also known as FIBT from the French . National competitions are often governed by bodies such as the United States Bobsled and Skeleton Federation, Bobsleigh Canada Skeleton, and the German Bobsleigh, Luge, and Skeleton Federation. The first bobsleds were built in the late 19th century in St. Moritz, Switzerland, by wealthy tourists from Victorian Britain who were staying at the Palace Hotel owned by Caspar Badrutt. Jānis Ķipurs
Jānis Ķipurs (sometimes shown as Yanis Kipurs or Janis Kipurs, born 3 January 1958 in Kurmene, Kurmene parish) is a Latvian bobsledder who competed for the Soviet Union in the late 1980s. At the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary, he won two medals with a gold in the two-man event and a bronze in the four-man event. Ķipurs also won a bronze medal in the two-man event at the 1989 FIBT World Championships in Cortina d'Ampezzo. He won the two-man Bobsleigh World Cup championship in 1987–88. Brian Shimer
Brian Shimer (born April 20, 1962) is an American bobsledder who competed from 1985 to 2002. Competing in five Winter Olympics, he won the bronze medal in the four-man event at Salt Lake City in 2002. Shimer also won three bronze medals at the FIBT World Championships with one in the two-man event (1997) and two in the four-man event (1993, 1997). He won the 1992–3 Bobsleigh World Cup championships both in the four-man and the combined men's events. Shimer retired after the 2002 Winter Olympics and became head coach of the US men's bobsleigh team. Chris Lori
Chris Lori (born July 24, 1962) is a Canadian bobsled driver who competed from the late 1980s to the late 1990s. Competing in four Winter Olympics, he earned his best finish of fourth in the four-man event at Albertville in 1992. Lori won the Bobsleigh Overall World Cup four-man championship in 1989-90. He won nine Crystal Globes for top three finishes in Overall World Cup final standingsworld cup historical results at fibt.com and totaled twenty two World Cup medals and fourteen Canadian Championship titles. He Lori was instrumental in establishing Canada as a world power in the sport of bobsledding. Nico Baracchi
Nico Baracchi (April 19, 1957 – March 24, 2015) was a Switzerland, Swiss bobsledder and Skeleton (sport), skeleton racer who competed from the early 1980s to the late 1990s. He won two silver medals at the FIBT World Championships with his first in skeleton at St. Moritz in FIBT World Championships 1982, 1982 and his second in bobsleigh's four-man event at Cortina d'Ampezzo in FIBT World Championships 1989, 1989. Baracchi died on March 24, 2015, at the age of 57 in his home of Celerina, Switzerland. Barrachi's best finish in the List of Bobsleigh World Cup champions, Bobsleigh World Cup was third in 1988-9, both in the combined men's and two-man events. When skeleton was reintroduced as a sport in 1989, Baracchi tried to regain his success in the early 1980s, but without much success. Detlef Richter (born 6 June 1956 in Leipzig, Saxony) is an East German bobsledder who competed from the late 1970s to the late 1980s. He won a bronze medal in the four-man event at the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid.
