The Bethany Swedes football program (historically known as the "Terrible Swedes") is a college football team that represents Bethany College (Kansas), Bethany College in the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference, a part of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, NAIA. The team has had 17 head coaches on record since its first recorded football game in 1893. The current head coach is Curran White who took over for the 2019 season. White replaced Paul Hubbard (American football coach), Paul Hubbard who took the position after the conclusion of the 2014 season and the departure of Manny Matsakis. Matsakis was hired in March 2013 to replace Jamie Cruce who first took the position for the 2006 season and resigned after completion of the 2012 season. Bennie Owen
Benjamin Gilbert Owen (July 24, 1875 – February 26, 1970) was an American football player and coach of football, basketball, and baseball. He served as the head football coach at Washburn College, now Washburn University, in 1900, at Bethany College in Lindsborg, Kansas from 1902 to 1904, and at the University of Oklahoma from 1905 to 1926, compiling a career college football record of 155–60–19. Owen was also the head basketball coach at Oklahoma from 1908 to 1921, tallying a mark of 113–49, and the head baseball coach at the school from 1906 to 1922, amassing a record of 142–102–4. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame as a coach in 1951. Adrian Hobart "Ad" Lindsey (August 15, 1895 – October 2, 1980) was an American football player and coach of football and baseball. He served as the head football coach at Bethany College in Lindsborg, Kansas from 1922 to 1926, at the University of Oklahoma from 1927 to 1931, and at the University of Kansas from 1932 to 1938, compiling a career college football record of 66–64–16. Lindsey was also the head baseball coach at Kansas for one season in 1921, tallying a mark of 13–2. Coaching career Lindsey began the 1932 season at Kansas as an assistant to Homer Woodson Hargiss. Hargiss was fired as head football coach on October 10, 1932, two days after the Jawhawks lost at home to Oklahoma, 21–6.
