Beefsteak Club
Beefsteak Club is the name or nickname of several 18th- and 19th-century male dining clubs in Britain and Australia that celebrated the beefsteak as a symbol of patriotic and often Whig concepts of liberty and prosperity. The first beefsteak club was founded about 1705 in London by the actor Richard Estcourt and others in the arts and politics. This club flourished for less than a decade. The Sublime Society of Beef Steaks was established in 1735 by another performer, John Rich, at the Theatre Royal, Covent Garden, where he was then manager, and George Lambert, his scenic artist, with two dozen members of the theatre and arts community ( Samuel Johnson joined in 1780). The society became much celebrated, and new members included royalty, statesmen and great soldiers: in 1785, the Prince of Wales joined. Charles Williams, Baron Williams Of Elvel
Charles Cuthbert Powell Williams, Baron Williams of Elvel, (9 February 1933 – 30 December 2019) was a British business executive, Labour life peer and member of the House of Lords. In his 20s he played first-class cricket while at university and for several seasons afterwards. He was the stepfather of Justin Welby, the Archbishop of Canterbury. Early life Williams was born on 9 February 1933, the son of N. P. Williams and Muriel de Lérisson Cazenove. His mother's brother was Brigadier Arnold de Lérisson Cazenove. He was educated at Westminster School and at Christ Church, Oxford, where he received a Bachelor of Arts in '' literae humaniores'' in 1955 and a Master of Arts. David Eugene Henry Pryce-Jones (born 15 February 1936) is a British conservative author and commentator. Early life Pryce-Jones was born on 15 February 1936, in Vienna, Austria. He was educated at Eton and earned a degree in history at Magdalen College, Oxford. He is the son of writer Alan Payan Pryce-Jones (1908–2000) by his first wife (married 1934), Therese "Poppy" Fould-Springer (1914–1953) of the Fould family. David Arthur Russell Howell, Baron Howell of Guildford, (born 18 January 1936) is a British Conservative Party politician, journalist, and economic consultant. Having been successively Secretary of State for Energy and then for Transport under Margaret Thatcher, Howell has more recently been a Minister of State in the Foreign Office from the election in 2010 until the reshuffle of 2012. He has served as Chair of the House of Lords International Relations Committee since May 2016. Along with William Hague, Sir George Young and Kenneth Clarke, he is one of the few Cabinet ministers from the 1979–97 governments who continued to hold high office in the party, being its deputy leader in the House of Lords until 2010. John Hemming (explorer)
John Henry Hemming (born 1935) is a historian and explorer, expert on Incas and indigenous peoples of the Amazon basin. Early life and education Hemming was born in Vancouver on 5 January 1935. His father, Henry Harold Hemming, who had served in the First World War, foresaw the Second, and wanted him to be born in North America. So he sent John's mother, Alice Hemming, a journalist, on a cruise through the Panama Canal that ended in British Columbia. John and his sister Louisa were brought back to London when he was two months old. Field Marshal Peter Anthony Inge, Baron Inge, (5 August 1935 – 20 July 2022) was a senior British Army officer. He was the Chief of the General Staff, the professional head of the British Army, from 1992 to 1994 and then served as Chief of the Defence Staff before retiring in 1997. Ian Curteis
Ian Bayley Curteis (1 May 1935 – 24 November 2021) was a British dramatist and television director. Life and career Curteis was born in London on 1 May 1935, and began his career as an actor, joining Joan Littlewood's Theatre Workshop in the mid-1950s, and later working in this profession in regional theatres, and as a stage director or producer. His career in television began as a script reader for both the BBC and Granada Television. Curteis joined the staff of the BBC as a trainee director in 1964. ''The Projected Man'' (1966), which he directed, is his only cinema film. Around the same time Curteis directed an episode of the BBC2 anthology series, ''Out of the Unknown'', William Trevor's "Walk's End". Both projects had a problematic production; Curteis has disputed the claims of the producers of both. John Guinness
Sir John Ralph Sidney Guinness CB (23 December 1935 – 27 July 2020) was a British civil servant and businessman. Education and family Guinness was educated at Rugby School and Trinity Hall, Cambridge. In 1967 he married Valerie Susan North of Rougham Hall, Norfolk. The couple had three children, a daughter Lucy and sons Rupert and Peter. She died in March 2014. Career Guinness had previously been a member of HM Diplomatic Service and had worked in the Cabinet Office (inter alia involved in the setting up of the National Heritage Memorial Fund) and had been Permanent Secretary of the Department of Energy from 1991 to 1992 and Chairman of British Nuclear Fuels Ltd from 1992 to 1993. James Esmond Bulmer (born 19 May 1935) was a British Conservative Party (UK), Conservative Party politician. He is the son of Edward Charles Bulmer (b. 1907) and his wife Margaret Leigh (Roberts) Bulmer (b. 1908). His father a R.A.F Flight Lieutenant was killed in 1941 whilst on active service. Alexander Randal Mark McDonnell, 9th Earl of Antrim, (3 February 1935 – 21 July 2021), known as Alexander Dunluce, was a Northern Irish landowner, peer, artist, and art restorer.
