Below is a selected list of ''Narcissus'' species, varieties and cultivars which currently (2020) hold the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit (AGM). Narcissus (daffodils) are bulbous perennials which are usually planted as dormant bulbs in autumn (fall) to flower the following spring. Once established they flower reliably every year, with variously trumpet-shaped flowers in a range of colours, mostly shades of white and yellow. The central trumpet (corona) and the outer 'petals' (perianth segments) often have contrasting colours. Breeders have produced a huge range of sizes and shapes in these flowers, which are among the most popular of all plants in cultivation. Narcissus (plant)
''Narcissus'' is a genus of predominantly spring flowering perennial plant, perennial plants of the amaryllis family, Amaryllidaceae. Various common names including daffodil,The word "daffodil" is also applied to related genera such as ''Sternbergia'', ''Ismene (plant), Ismene'' and ''Fritillaria meleagris''. It has been suggested that the word "Daffodil" be restricted to the wild species of the British Isles, ''N. pseudonarcissus''. narcissus, and jonquil are used to describe all or some members of the genus. ''Narcissus'' has conspicuous flowers with six petal-like tepals surmounted by a cup- or trumpet-shaped Corona (plant structure), corona. The flowers are generally white and yellow (also orange or pink in garden varieties), with either uniform or contrasting coloured tepals and corona. Badbury Rings
Badbury Rings is an Iron Age hill fort and Scheduled Monument in east Dorset, England. It was in the territory of the Durotriges. In the Roman era a temple was located immediately west of the fort, and there was a Romano-British town known as ''Vindocladia'' a short distance to the south-west. Iron Age Badbury Rings sits above sea level. There are two main phases of construction; the first covered and was defended by multiple ditches, while the second was more than twice the size, covering and defended by a single ditch and rampart. Bronze Age round barrows in the vicinity demonstrate an earlier use of the area. Until 1983 Badbury Rings was privately owned as part of the Kingston Lacy estate, and the owners discouraged investigation of the site. The site now belongs to the National Trust. Dickcissel
The dickcissel (''Spiza americana'') is a small seed-eating migratory bird in the family Cardinalidae. It breeds on the prairie grasslands of the Midwestern United States and winters in Central America, northern Colombia, and northern Venezuela. It is the only member of the genus ''Spiza'', though some sources list another supposedly extinct species (see below). Taxonomy The dickcissel was formally described in 1789 by German naturalist Johann Friedrich Gmelin under the binomial name ''Emberiza americana''. Gmelin based his description on Thomas Pennant's "black throated bunting" which Pennant had described and illustrated in 1785 in his ''Arctic Zoology''. The dickcissel is the only species placed in the genus ''Spiza'' that was introduced in 1824 by French naturalist Charles Lucien Bonaparte. Desdemona () is a character in William Shakespeare's play ''Othello'' (c. 1601–1604). Shakespeare's Desdemona is a Venetian beauty who enrages and disappoints her father, a Venetian senator, when she elopes with Othello, a Moorish Venetian military prodigy. When her husband is deployed to Cyprus in the service of the Republic of Venice, Desdemona accompanies him. The curlews () are a group of nine species of birds in the genus ''Numenius'', characterised by their long, slender, downcurved bills and mottled brown plumage. The English name is imitative of the Eurasian curlew's call, but may have been influenced by the Old French ''corliu'', "messenger", from ''courir '', "to run". Bryanston
Bryanston is a village and civil parish in north Dorset, England, situated on the River Stour west of Blandford Forum. In the 2011 census the parish had a population of 925. The village is adjacent to the grounds of Bryanston School, an independent school. The village was named after Brian de Lisle, a Baron at the court of King John. The Rogers family owned it for a long period of time, and it was later purchased by Sir William Portman, 6th Baronet, who took part in crushing Monmouth's rebellion in 1685. In the 1890s the Portman family built a large country house, designed by Richard Norman Shaw and set in . Since 1927 the building has been the home of Bryanston School. In 1950 Viscount Portman gave up the Bryanston Estates as part payment of death duties. The estate was then owned by the crown until 2015 when the estate was purchased by a UK company held on behalf of the Viscount Rothermere and his son the Hon Vere Harmsworth for an undisclosed sum.
