List Of Award Of Garden Merit Magnolias
Below is a list of magnolia species and cultivars which currently (2016) hold the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit. Magnolias are shrubs or trees which put on a showy display of tulip-like flowers, often scented, in early to late spring. Many are slow-growing and may take several years to start flowering. They are suitable for cultivation in parks or gardens in temperate regions. ''M. stellata'' is suitable for smaller gardens. All are deciduous except for ''M. grandiflora'', which is evergreen. The AGM citation includes a hardiness rating: all of the plants listed here are rated H6 (hardy down to -20 °C to -15 °C) or H5 (hardy down to -15 °C to -10 °C). This is indicated in the column marked H. Nevertheless, magnolias prefer a sheltered spot, and flower buds may be damaged by late frosts. The maximum size (height and spread) is shown in metres. ''Magnolia sprengeri'', or Sprenger's magnolia, is a species of ''Magnolia'' native to China, occurring in Gansu, Henan, Hubei, Hunan, Shaanxi, and Sichuan in forests or thickets at 1300–2400 m altitude. Named for Carl Ludwig Sprenger, a botanist of note. Identification It is a small deciduous tree, to 20 m in height with pale grayish brown to blackish brown, exfoliating bark. Young twigs are pale yellowish brown. The dark green leaves are obovate, 10–18 cm long and 4.5–10 cm broad, with a 1–3 cm petiole. ''Magnolia'' × ''loebneri'' Kache is a hybrid of two Magnolia species, the Japanese ''Magnolia kobus'' and '' M. stellata''. crossed by ''Garteninspektor'' Max Löbner of Pillnitz, Germany, shortly before World War I; it first flowered in 1917. The deciduous, elegant and compact multi-stemmed small flowering tree or large shrub, slowly attaining a height of and somewhat wider at maturity, is hardy to USDA Zone 4. Its fragrant late flowers, following its ''stellata'' parent by a couple of weeks, escape unexpected late spring frosts, but appear on the bare branches, to great effect.
