Samantha Fonti
Samantha Fonti (born 12 February 1973) is an Australian film composer and classically trained violinist. Fonti was raised and born in Sydney, Australia. She started her classical music training at the age of 3 and completed her Bachelor of Music degree as a violin major at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music in 2000. She also attended the Australian Film, Television and Radio School (AFTRS) graduate screen composition course in Sydney. She is best known for her emotive orchestral film scoring and, as a former session musician and multi-instrumentalist, performs on most of her scores. She was nominated for Best Original Score for the short film ''Moving Day'' at the St Kilda International Film Festival 2011 and was a finalist for APRA's Professional Development Awards in 2009. Mary Finsterer
Mary Finsterer (born 25 August 1962) is an Australian composer and academic. Life Finsterer was born in Canberra in 1962; her siblings are the actors Anni Finsterer and Jack Finsterer. She graduated in 1987 with a Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Melbourne. A recipient of the Royal Netherlands Government Award in 1993, she continued her studies in Amsterdam with Louis Andriessen, then returned to Australia and studied with Brenton Broadstock, completing a Master of Music degree in 1995 at the University of Melbourne. She completed a Doctor of Philosophy degree in 2003. In 2006 she received a Churchill Fellowship for her continuing work in multimedia. Florence Maude Ewart
Florence Maude Ewart (16 November 1864c.8 November 1949) was an English violinist, music educator and composer who lived and worked in Australia. Biography Florence Donaldson was born in Kentish Town, London, the daughter of accountant Frederick William Donaldson and his wife Elizabeth Lewis. Ewart studied violin with John Carrodus and made her début as a violinist at age 14 at the Albert Hall, London. She won one of the first twelve Birmingham scholarships to the South Kensington National Training School, later the Royal College of Music, and continued her studies in Leipzig and Berlin with Joseph Joachim. After completing her studies, she worked in Birmingham as a conductor, violinist and music lecturer. In December 1898, she married Alfred James Ewart, whom she had met in Leipzig, at the parish Church of St. Paul, Oxford. The couple settled in Birmingham and had two sons born in 1900 and 1902. Winsome Evans
Winsome Joan Evans OAM BEM (born 26 October 1941), is one of Australia's premier early music specialists. Biography She received a Bachelor of Music (Honours) degree in composition from the University of Sydney, where her lecturers included Peter Sculthorpe. In addition to her activities as a professional harpsichordist, composer, and arranger, she is perhaps best known for her role as director of the Renaissance Players, one of Australia's best known early music ensembles. She was until recently an Associate Professor of music at the University of Sydney. Evans has "re-composed" all of Johann Sebastian Bach's works for solo violin as works for clavicembalo, adding accompaniments as she believes Bach must have had in mind. Her recording of her recomposition of the 6 Sonatas and Partitas, BWV 1001–1006, was released in 2009. Melissa Dunphy
Melissa Dunphy (born 1980) is an Australian-American composer of classical music. She is most notable for the ''Gonzales Cantata'', a 40-minute choral piece in Baroque style that sets the text of the parts of the dismissal of U.S. attorneys controversy hearings in which former Attorney General Alberto Gonzales testified. It was featured on the ''Rachel Maddow Show'' in 2009; Maddow described it as "probably the coolest thing you've ever seen on this show." Dunphy completed her doctoral degree at the University of Pennsylvania in 2014. Dunphy is the composer-in-residence for the Saint Louis Chamber Chorus, for which she has composed several a cappella choral works since her appointment in 2015. Catherine Duc
Catherine Duc is a Vietnamese-Australian composer and producer of music blending elements of ambient, classical, electronica and world music. Her work has been aired on Australian Broadcasting Corporation's ABC Jazz. In 2005 Duc issued her debut album, ''Visions and Dreams''. History Catherine Duc was born in Melbourne. She started her musical journey from a young age. As a child, Duc studied keyboard and classical piano and later completed studies in music arrangement, live recording and production at the Alfred Brash Sound House in the Melbourne Concert Hall. Ruby Claudia Davy
Ruby Claudia Emily Davy (22 November 1883 – 12 July 1949) was an Australian pianist, composer and educator. She was the first woman in Australia to receive a DMus degree. The daughter of William Charles Davy, a shoemaker and musician, and Louisa Jane Litchfield, a singer and music teacher, she was born in Salisbury, South Australia. Davy received a BMus and MMus from the Elder Conservatorium of Music. She also earned a diploma in elocution from the London College of Music. She became a fellow of Trinity College London in 1921, the first woman outside of Britain to receive that honour. In 1912, she taught theory and counterpoint as a temporary replacement at the Conservatorium. She moved to Prospect with her parents in 1920; Davy and her mother taught music there. After her parents died in 1929, she suffered a nervous breakdown and abandoned music and teaching for four years. She moved to Melbourne in 1934.
