Novelist
A novelist is an author or writer of novels, though often novelists also write in other genres of both fiction and non-fiction. Some novelists are professional novelists, thus make a living writing novels and other fiction, while others aspire to support themselves in this way or write as an avocation. Most novelists struggle to have their debut novel published, but once published they often continue to be published, although very few become literary celebrities, thus gaining prestige or a considerable income from their work. Description Novelists come from a variety of backgrounds and social classes, and frequently this shapes the content of their works. Public reception of a novelist's work, the literary criticism commenting on it, and the novelists' incorporation of their own experiences into works and characters can lead to the author's personal life and identity being associated with a novel's fictional content. Lindsay Armstrong is a popular South African-Australian writer of over 65 romance novels. She published her novels in Mills & Boon's since 1981. Armstrong was born and raised in South Africa, and married a New Zealand-born man who worked in West Africa. Bunty Avieson
Carolyn "Bunty" Avieson is an Australian journalist, feature writer, novelist and academic. Career Avieson has a PhD and a Master of Philosophy from Macquarie University, as well as an Associate Diploma of Journalism from RMIT University. In 2008–2009 she worked as a media consultant to newspaper ''Bhutan Observer,'' partly funded by the United Nations Development Program and was a consultant to Journalists Without Borders, Asia Pacific Desk. Avieson has published three novels, a novella and travel memoir; and been translated into Japanese, German and Thai. She is the recipient of two Ned Kelly Awards. Louisa Atkinson
Caroline Louisa Waring Calvert (; 25 February 1834 – 28 April 1872) was an early Australian writer, botanist and illustrator. While she was well known for her fiction during her lifetime, her long-term significance rests on her botanical work. She is regarded as a ground-breaker for Australian women in journalism and natural science, and is significant in her time for her sympathetic references to Aboriginal Australians in her writings and her encouragement of conservation. Life Louisa, as she was generally known, was born on her parents' property "Oldbury", Sutton Forest, about from Berrima, New South Wales, and was their fourth child. Her father, James Atkinson, was the author of an early Australian book, ''An Account of the State of Agriculture and Grazing in New South Wales'', published in 1826. Hugh Atkinson (novelist)
Hugh Geddes Atkinson (19241994) was an Australian novelist, journalist, screenwriter and documentary film maker. Early career Hugh Atkinson was born in Parkes, New South Wales, Australia. In the course of his career, he worked at various jobs in the media industry in England, Germany, India, the Pacific and Australia. He worked as an advertising copywriter for the Lintas Group in the 1950s. He spent five years working as a technical officer for the Indian Government. He worked as a scriptwriter for the United Nations for two years. He became a full-time novelist in the late 1960s. Writing career Hugh Atkinson's first novel, ''The Pink and the Brown'', was published in 1957 and duly acclaimed as a critical success. Among other things, it looked at race relations in India in the 1950s. One of his later novels, ''The Longest Wire'', recounted the story of the Overland Telegraph, one of the most ambitious projects attempted in 19th-century Australia. Tilly Aston
Matilda Ann Aston (11 December 1873 – 1 November 1947), better known as Tilly Aston, was a blind Australian writer and teacher, who founded the Victorian Association of Braille Writers, and later went on to establish the Association for the Advancement of the Blind, with herself as secretary. She is remembered for her achievements in promoting the rights of vision-impaired people. Life Tilly was born in the town of Carisbrook, Victoria in 1873, the youngest of eight children born to Edward Aston, a bootmaker, and his wife, Ann. Thea Astley
Thea Beatrice May Astley (25 August 1925 – 17 August 2004) was an Australian novelist and short story writer. She was a prolific writer who was published for over 40 years from 1958. At the time of her death, she had won more Miles Franklin Awards, Australia's major literary award, than any other writer. As well as being a writer, she taught at all levels of education – primary, secondary and tertiary. David Astle
David Astle (born 9 November 1961) is an Australian TV personality and radio host, and writer of non-fiction, fiction and plays. He also co-hosted the SBS Television (SBS) show ''Letters and Numbers'', as the dictionary expert, in company with Richard Morecroft and Lily Serna, a role to which he returned for '' Celebrity Letters and Numbers'' in 2021. Career Astle's cryptic crosswords, appearing under the name "DA" in ''The Age'' and ''The Sydney Morning Herald'' (for which he also writes the "Wordplay" section), have developed a large following which includes musician Holly Throsby and actor Geoffrey Rush. Melissa Ashley (born 1973) is an Australian novelist. In the 2017 Queensland Literary Awards, her novel ''The Birdman's Wife'' won the University of Queensland Fiction Book Award. It also received the Australian Booksellers Association Nielsen BookData 2017 Booksellers Choice Award. Biography Ashley was born 1973 in Christchurch, New Zealand and arrived in Australia aged eight. Ashley has two children and is a self-confessed committed "twitcher". Helen Asher
Helen Asher (also known as Helen Ulrich, 1927 – 19 October 2001) was an Australian novelist and short story writer. Biography Born Waltraud Helene Rosalie Ulrich, Asher migrated to Australia from Germany as a post-World War II refugee. Asher and her husband Mervyn were active in the Australian literary scene. Asher published ''Tilly's Fortunes'' through Penguin in 1986. She also wrote under the name Helen Ulrich, and her short stories were featured in numerous anthologies. Asher bequeathed money to the Australia Council for the establishment of a biennial prize to be awarded to “a female author whose work carries an anti-war theme”. The $12,000 Asher Award was administered by the Australian Society of Authors from 2005 to 2017.
