Nellie Bramley
Ellen "Nellie" Odelle Bramley (4 February 1890 – 9 June 1982) was an Australian stage actress who gained prominence during the early 20th century as a leading actress on stage and opened the Palace Theatre, Melbourne around 1914. Bramley was the first female Australian to establish her own theatre company in 1922, named after herself and which toured all of Australia, as well as New Zealand and Tasmania. Her earlier years touring New Zealand and Tasmania were successful, with sell-out performances in Launceston, Tasmania where at the time, she was the youngest star to have ever visited the city. Around 1930, she considered cancelling some performances due to the effects of the great depression, citing low audience numbers. Following financial difficulties and low ticket sales, Bramley filed for bankruptcy in May 1934, with unpaid debts around £3,250 mostly incurred from previous show losses. Gaston Mervale
Gaston Mervale (1882–1934) was an Australian director and actor who worked extensively on stage and in films. He directed several films for the Australian Life Biograph Company. After this wound up he went to New York and worked as an actor for several years. He returned to Australia in 1917 to produce plays. Eugenie Duggan
Eugenie Marian Duggan (1872 – 2 November 1936) was a popular Australian stage actress. She was the sister of the actors Edmund, P.J. and Kathleen Duggan. She began studying acting, won a number of elocution competitions and made her professional debut in 1890 in ''Romeo and Juliet''. She joined the company of theatre entrepreneur William Anderson, and later married him. She played a wide range of roles throughout Australia and New Zealand, including the title part in the original 1907 production of '' The Squatter's Daughter''. In 1910 she played Princess Monica in '' The Prince and the Beggar Maid'' in a tour of Australia. In 1911 she appeared in the short film of The Christian as Glory Quayle. In 1920 she toured with her own company, the Eugenie Duggan Company. She later retired from acting and established a drama school. George Ellsworthy "Roy" Redgrave (26 April 1873 – 25 May 1922) was an English stage and silent film actor. Redgrave is considered to be the first member of the Redgrave acting dynasty. Early life Born George Edward Redgrave in 122 Kennington Road, Kennington, a district of Lambeth in South London in 1873, he was the eldest son of George Augustus Redgrave (1851–81), a maker of the board game Bagatelle, and Zoe Beatrice Elsworthy (''née'' Pym, later Howard; 1856–1936). By 1897, he was professionally known as Roy Redgrave apparently in the belief that he was descended from Rob Roy. The Redgrave family originated in the Northamptonshire village of Crick. Redgrave also assumed the middle name "Elsworthy" from his mother, and his sister took the stage name Dolly Elsworthy. Redgrave was the eldest of five siblings. ''The Christian'' is a 1911 Australian silent film starring Roy Redgrave and Eugenie Duggan. It was the first film directed by Franklyn Barrett. The film was based on Hall Caine's play adapted from his novel ''The Christian'' which was published in 1897 and the first British novel to sell one million copies. It is considered a lost film. Plot Clergyman John Storm is doing mission work in the slums of London when he meets Glory, a girl from the country, who has been persuaded by Lord Robert Ure to seek a career on the stage. Storm tries to persuade Glory not to do it but she refuses. He then asks Lord Ure, which so infuriates him he sends someone to burn down Storm's mission hall. Storm is unconscious inside but he is rescued at the last minute. He goes to see Glory, determined to save her soul, by killing her if need be. ''Captain Starlight, or Gentleman of the Road'' is a 1911 Australian silent film about the bushranger Captain Starlight. It was based on Alfred Dampier's stage adaptation of the 1888 novel '' Robbery Under Arms''. It is considered a lost film. Film It is possible to gauge some idea of the plot from contemporary reviews. One critic wrote that "plenty of relief in the way of comedy has been introduced; and whilst there are many grim incidents, these are not allowed to unduly obtrude themselves." The film starts at the home of the Marston family. Some troopers, led by Sergeant Goring, are looking for Captain Starlight. Goring harasses Aileen Marston when a Mr Beresford appears. Lily Dampier
Katherine Annabel Lily Dampier (1867 or 1868 – 6 February 1915), known as Lily Dampier, was an Australian actor of stage and screen. She was the daughter of Alfred Dampier and married to Alfred Rolfe. Her best known stage parts were Sylvia in ''For the Term of His Natural Life'' and Kate in ''Robbery Under Arms''. She also performed many roles from Shakespeare and worked in England. A contemporary described her as a better actress than her sister Rose: Certainly she was the more forceful, physically, and vocally, but she was disqualified for high tragic roles by the fact that she had ridiculously small feet for a well developed woman, and used to walk in mincing and tottering steps in moments when rhythmic striding was needed. Alfred Rolfe, real name Alfred Roker (1862– 9 September 1943), was an Australian stage and film director and actor, best known for being the son-in-law of the celebrated actor-manager Alfred Dampier, with whom he appeared frequently on stage, and for his prolific output as a director during Australia's silent era, including ''Captain Midnight, the Bush King'' (1911), ''Captain Starlight, or Gentleman of the Road'' (1911) and ''The Hero of the Dardanelles'' (1915). ''Caloola, or The Adventures of a Jackeroo'' is a 1911 Australian silent film directed by Alfred Rolfe based on a novel published the previous year by Clement Pratt. It is considered a lost film. Plot An Englishman, Charlie Hargreaves, is falsely accused of an embezzlement and goes to Australia, where he finds work as a jackeroo at Caloola Station. He falls in love with Hilda, the station owner's daughter, but they are both captured by aboriginals. The girl's parents arrange a search party and come to the rescue, but the chief of the tribe takes the girl. He is about to throw her over a cliff when the jackeroo comes to the rescue. He encounters a bushfire and manages to escape death in a watery grave.
