Equestrianism (from Latin , , , 'horseman', 'horse'), commonly known as horse riding (Commonwealth English) or horseback riding (American English), includes the disciplines of riding, Driving (horse), driving, and Equestrian vaulting, vaulting. Mary Hanna
Mary Hanna (née Sutherland) (born 1 December 1954) is an Australian equestrian. She has represented Australia at six Olympic Games in the equestrian discipline of dressage (Atlanta 1996 with Mosaic, Sydney 2000 and Athens 2004 with Limbo, London 2012 with Sancette, Rio 2016 with Boogie Woogie and Tokyo 2020 with Calanta). Personal Hanna was born on 1 December 1954 in Melbourne, Australia. She attended Macarthur State School in Victoria before going to high school at Presbyterian Ladies' College. She has a Bachelor of Arts degree. Her husband is Rob Hanna, Equestrian Australia chef d'equipe. Equestrian Hanna is an equestrian dressage competitor. She has been coached by Kyra Kyrklund and Clemens Dierks. Currently she is coached by Patrik Kittel. Her primary training base is in Gisborne, Victoria , Australia. Kelly Layne
Kelly Layne (born 14 May 1975) is an Australian Dressage rider and trainer. She planned on qualifying to represent her country at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. However, Layne was unable to compete in the final qualifying event due to an injury suffered by her horse, Udon P, forcing her to withdraw. While born in Australia, Layne is currently based in Wellington, Florida. Layne also helped found her own riding team, "Dream Team Dressage". Throughout her career, Layne has scored an average of 67.491 (150 classes) per competition with her highest score being a 76.613. In dressage, above a 60 is considered satisfactory. In addition to riding Layne also helps to advise clients with finding horses and one of Layne's horses represented Japan in the 2008 Summer Olympics. Neale Lavis
Neale John Lavis (11 June 1930 – 6 October 2019) was an Australian equestrian and Olympic champion. He won a team gold medal in eventing at the 1960 Summer Olympics in Rome, and a silver medal in individual eventing. He also participated at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, but did not win any medals there. He later became involved with a cattle and racehorse stud in Braidwood, which produced Just A Dash, the winner of the 1981 Melbourne Cup, and Strawberry Road, the 1982/83 Racehorse of the Year. After the Rome Olympics, he married Velma; they had four children. Lavis was inducted into the Sport Australia Hall of Fame in 1989, received a Medal of the Order of Australia in 1999, and received an Australian Sports Medal in 2000. Nicole Kullen
Nicole Cassandra Kullen (15 April 1980 – 6 August 2018) was an Australian equestrian paralympian. Personal life In August 1996, Kullen contracted meningococcal meningitis sepsis. Kullen spent the next six weeks on life support in an induced coma. After coming out of the coma, she spent a further six months in hospital recovering from the illness and undergoing rehabilitation. Due to the illness both her legs were amputated, giving her restricted arm movement, limited strength and no function in both hands and wrists. Her internal organs continued to cause health complications due to the effect the illness had on her organs. In 2000, Kullen lost all function in both kidneys and relied on peritoneal dialysis four times a day. In 2003, her son Kyle was born prematurely, but he later died following complications of the birth. Scott Keach
Scott Keach (born 21 April 1965) is an Australian equestrian who competed at the 1988 Summer Olympics in the three-day event. In 2016, he was again named to compete at the Olympics, this time in the show jumping. The 28-year gap between Olympics was a record for Australia. Megan Jones (equestrian)
Megan Jones (born 6 November 1976) is one of Australia's top event riders, a Silver Medalist at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. Jones began riding at the age of 5, continued through her early years in Pony Club before hitting the international scene in 2003 at the World Cup Final. In 2005, she won Melbourne International Three Day Event riding three star on Kirby Park Irish Jester, then later in the same year won the four star at the 2005 Adelaide Horse Trials on the same mount and a second in the two star competition on another. Chosen to compete in the 2006 World Equestrian Games, she was on the bronze medal winning Australian Event Team, and finished 16th individually. Vaughn Jefferis
Vaughn Jefferis (born 20 May 1961 in Huntly) is a New Zealand horseman who won a bronze medal at the Olympic Games. Initially competing in showjumping Jefferis switched to Eventing in 1990 and had immediate success, being part of the gold medal team at the World Equestrian Games in Stockholm riding ''Enterprise''. Jefferis purchased ''Bounce'' in 1994 and rode the horse for the remainder of his international career. Sharon Jarvis
Sharon Jarvis (born 31 October 1978) is an Australian para-equestrian. She represented Australia at the three Summer Paralympics - 2008 Beijing, 2016 Rio and 2020 Tokyo . Personal Jarvis was born on 31 October 1978. At the age of seven, she was diagnosed with bone cancer (Ewing sarcoma) in her left femur and given an only 20 per cent chance of surviving. She survived the cancer through twelve months of chemotherapy and radiation therapy but a year later broke the same leg affected by cancer. This led to numerous operations and skin grafts and as a result she has severely limited movement on her left side. She operates a pony stud called Applewood in Donnybrook, Western Australia. Equestrian Jarvis began riding at the age of three and her parents purchased her a pony when she was four. Marita Hird
Marita Hird (born 25 February 1971) is a Paralympic equestrian competitor from Australia. She won a bronze medal at the 2000 Sydney Games in the Mixed Dressage – Freestyle grade III event. Personal Hird was born in Kew, Victoria. She was a jockey until 1993 when she fell from her horse during a race. Hird broke her neck in three places and was advised that she was an incomplete quadriplegic. However, after nine months Hird learned to walk again and began riding horses as a form of therapy. Sporting career After being encouraged to compete in dressage, Hird won bronze at the World Championships in Aarhus Denmark. She went on to win bronze in the Mixed Dressage - Freestyle grade III event at the 2000 Paralympics in Sydney.
