List Of Australian High Commissioners To Cyprus
The High Commissioner of Australia to Cyprus is an officer of the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and the head of the High Commission of the Commonwealth of Australia in Nicosia, with responsibility for both the internationally recognised Republic of Cyprus and the unrecognised Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. The position has the rank and status of an Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary and is currently held by Fiona McKergow since January 2022. There has been a resident Australian High Commissioner in Cyprus since 1982, from 1973 to 1982 the Ambassador to Greece held non-resident accreditation for Cyprus. Evan John Williams (born. 1950) is a retired Australian diplomat and public servant who served as the Administrator of the Australian Indian Ocean Territories from 1 November 2003 until 31 October 2005. Early career Evan Williams grew up in the Blue Mountains of New South Wales and was educated at Katoomba High School, graduating in 1968, the first graduating year of the Wyndham Scheme. Williams holds a BA from Australian National University and a Master of Letters from University of New England, Australia. Williams joined the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade upon leaving university and took postings in Shanghai, Dar-es-Salaam, Bonn and Tehran. In 1989 Williams was appointed Consul-General and Counsellor in Jakarta, which was followed by appointments in this position in Manila (1994–1996) and London (1998–2002). Marshall Lewis Johnston (20 July 1923 – 31 October 2017) was an Australian public servant and diplomat. Johnston enlisted in the Australian Army in 1941, during World War II. In June 1980 Johnston was appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia in recognition of his public service as a diplomatic representative. Johnston retired from public service in 1984, his final post was as Australian Ambassador to Greece (1980–1984) and the non-resident High Commissioner to Cyprus (1980-1982). He died in October 2017 at the age of 94. Sir Leslie Wilson Johnson, (2 April 1916 – 31 August 2000) was an Australian public servant and diplomat. Career Johnson first went to Papua New Guinea in 1962. From 1966 to 1969, he was Assistant Administrator in Papua and New Guinea. He resigned in 1969 after internal differences with colleagues, before being appointed Administrator of Papua New Guinea in 1970. His task was to develop a colonial Administrator's council into a cabinet in preparation for Papua New Guinea's independence. On 2 December 1973, after 60 years of Papua New Guinea being a territory of Australia, Johnson's role changed from the Administrator of Papua New Guinea to the Australian High Commissioner to Papua New Guinea. He was a member of the Liberal Party and served in the House of Representatives from 1964 to 1973, representing the New South Wales seat of Parramatta.
