Australia National Rugby Union Team
The Australia national rugby union team, nicknamed the Wallabies, is the representative national team in the sport of rugby union for the nation of Australia. The team first played at Sydney in 1899, winning their first test match against the touring British Isles team. Australia have competed in all nine Rugby World Cups, winning the final on two occasions and also finishing as runner-up twice. Australia beat England at Twickenham in the final of the 1991 Rugby World Cup and won again in 1999 at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff when their opponents in the final were France. The Wallabies also compete annually in The Rugby Championship (formerly the Tri-Nations), along with southern hemisphere counterparts Argentina, New Zealand and South Africa. Ellis, a lock and flanker, was born in Newcastle, New South Wales and claimed a total of four international rugby caps for Australia. Patrick James S. "Paddy" Carew (10 September 1875 – 31 March 1942) was an Australian rugby union national and state representative and a first-class cricketer and public servant. He was born in Pine Mountain in southern Queensland. Sporting life Carew, a prop, claimed a total of four international rugby caps for Australia. All of those caps came in matches against Great Britain in 1899. His debut game was against Great Britain, at Sydney, on 24 June 1899, the inaugural rugby Test match played by an Australian national representative side. He was one of only five Queenslanders selected in that first Test. Four weeks later he played in the second Test at Brisbane. His performance in that match was noted as ''excellent'' by the press.
