Archibald Prize
The Archibald Prize is an Australian portraiture art prize for painting, generally seen as the most prestigious portrait prize in Australia. It was first awarded in 1921 after the receipt of a bequest from J. F. Archibald, J. F. Archibald, the editor of ''The Bulletin (Australian periodical), The Bulletin'' who died in 1919. It is administered by the trustees of the Art Gallery of New South Wales and awarded for "the best portrait, preferentially of some man or woman distinguished in Art, Letters, Science or Politics, painted by an artist resident in Australia during the twelve months preceding the date fixed by the trustees for sending in the pictures". The Archibald Prize has been awarded annually since 1921 (with two exceptions) and since July 2015 the prize has been Australian dollar, AU$100,000. Kerry O'Brien (journalist)
Kerry Michael O'Brien (born 27 August 1945) is an Australian journalist based in Byron Bay. He is the former editor and host of ''The 7.30 Report'' and ''Four Corners'' on the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC). He has been awarded six Walkley Awards during his career. Life and career O'Brien was born into a Catholic family in Brisbane, Queensland, where he attended St Laurence's College. He started as a news cadet at Channel 9 in Brisbane in 1966. He has worked in newspapers, wire service and television news and current affairs, as a general reporter, feature writer, political and foreign correspondent, interviewer and compere, and served as press secretary to Labor leader Gough Whitlam. Archibald is a masculine given name, composed of the Germanic elements '' erchan'' (with an original meaning of "genuine" or "precious") and ''bald'' meaning "bold". Guy Warren (artist)
Guy Wilkie Warren (born 16 April 1921) is an Australian painter who won the Archibald Prize in 1985 with ''Flugelman with Wingman''. His works have also been exhibited as finalists in the Dobell Prize and he received the Trustees Watercolour Award at the Wynne Prize in 1980. He turned 100 in 2021. Career Military service Warren (Service number NX110908) served in the Australian Army during World War II from 15 May 1941 until 3 April 1946. During his service outside Australia in New Guinea and Bougainville Island with the 136 Advance Supply Depot he rose to the rank of Staff Sergeant. Many of Warren's creative influences can be traced to his Army service. An experience of the jungle at Canungra in southeast Queensland, which was reinforced during his service in New Guinea became a constant theme throughout his career. Peter Wegner (Australian Artist)
Peter Wegner (born 1953) is a Melbourne-based figurative painter, sculptor, and drawing, draughtsman. His work hangs in many galleries in Australia, and he is known for winning the Archibald Prize in 2021. Early life and education Peter Wegner was born in 1953. He gained a fine arts degree in 1985, and obtained a postgraduate diploma in 1988 from the Phillip Institute of Technology. In 2007 he completed a Master of Fine Arts at Monash University. Career After Wegner exhibited his work in a in group exhibition in 1977, having had no training in art, he was awarded a two-year Alice Marian Ellen Bale#AME Bale Travelling Scholarship and Art Prize, A.M.E. Eryn Jean Norvill
Eryn Jean Norvill (born 1984), sometimes spelt Eryn-Jean Norvill, is an Australian stage and television actress. She has mostly performed in Sydney Theatre Company productions, and frequently collaborated with STC artistic director Kip Williams. In May 2022 she played all 26 characters in an adaptation of ''The Picture of Dorian Gray''. Early life and education Norvill was born in around 1984, and grew up in Sydney, New South Wales. As a child, she loved watching ''Star Trek'' and ''Star Wars'', and enjoyed reading science fiction and fantasy fiction. As a school student, she attended classes at the now-defunct Australian Youth Theatre, and decided to make a career in theatre. Oliver Watts
Oliver Watts is an Australian artist, lecturer and theorist. Biography Watts was born in Sydney, New South Wales. He studied Arts and Law, gaining Honours, at Sydney University. In 2010, he received a PhD in Art History and Theory, the title of his thesis being "Images on the Limit of Law: Sovereignty, Modernism and the Effigy". Work Watts works across a variety of media, ranging from performance art to painting and collage. His chief concern is the nexus of art and law, while his works are guided by the question "how do images command?". In a 2010 group exhibition, ''Triplicated'', Watts demonstrated how the law is both desirable and desirous. He revisited the Brothers Grimm fairy tale of the princess and a mythical sea-hare. Through videos and collage Watts has illustrated and sophomorically obfuscated the story through a variety of methods from jokes to critical theory.
