Archibald Prize
The Archibald Prize is an Australian portraiture art prize for painting, generally seen as the most prestigious portrait prize in Australia. It was first awarded in 1921 after the receipt of a bequest from J. F. Archibald, J. F. Archibald, the editor of ''The Bulletin (Australian periodical), The Bulletin'' who died in 1919. It is administered by the trustees of the Art Gallery of New South Wales and awarded for "the best portrait, preferentially of some man or woman distinguished in Art, Letters, Science or Politics, painted by an artist resident in Australia during the twelve months preceding the date fixed by the trustees for sending in the pictures". The Archibald Prize has been awarded annually since 1921 (with two exceptions) and since July 2015 the prize has been Australian dollar, AU$100,000. Lucy Culliton
Lucy Culliton (born 1966) is an Australian artist, based in Hartley. She is known for her paintings of landscapes and still life. Early life and education Culliton was born in Sydney in 1966. She studied fine art at the National Art School, graduating in 1996. Career Culliton joined the Ray Hughes Gallery in 1999 and is currently represented by King Street Gallery on William. She is a regular finalist in the Archibald, Wynne and Sulman Prizes. Her work is represented in the collections of the National Gallery of Australia and Parliament House, Canberra, as well as in many private collections. She lives and works in Bibbenluke, on the NSW Monaro. In 2013 she illustrated a picture book In 2016 Culliton is a participant in the Sydney Art of Music exhibition. Robert Jacks
Robert Jacks (8 March 1943, Melbourne—14 August 2014, Castlemaine) was an Australian painter, sculptor and printmaker. Born in Melbourne, Australia. He studied sculpture from 1958 to 1960 at the Prahran Technical College, Melbourne, and painting in 1961 and 1962 at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (now RMIT University). In 1966 he had his first solo exhibition at Gallery A, Melbourne from which a work was purchased for the collection of the National Gallery of Victoria. In 1968, he participated in ''The Field'' an extremely influential exhibition, held at the new National Gallery of Victoria building in St Kilda Road, which effectively launched color field abstraction in Australia. Hugo Weaving
Hugo Wallace Weaving (born 4 April 1960) is an English actor. Born in Colonial Nigeria to English parents, he has resided in Australia for the entirety of his career. He is the recipient of six AACTA Awards, Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts Awards (AACTA) and has also been recognised as an Honorary Officer of the Order of Australia. Nicholas Harding
Nicholas Harding (1956 – 2 November 2022) was a British-born Australian artist, known for his paintings, in particular portraits. Early life Harding was born in London, England in 1956. In 1965 his family emigrated to Australia, settling in the Sydney suburb of Normanhurst. He became an Australian citizen in 1974. Career Harding is known for his oil paintings done in a thickly layered impasto technique, his watercolours, and his large scale drawings in ink, mainly for landscape subjects; he is also an acclaimed portrait artist. Matt Moran
Matthew Moran (born 15 May 1969) is an Australian chef and restaurateur also known for being a guest on various TV cooking shows. Early life Moran was raised on a dairy farm at Badgerys Creek, west of Sydney, before moving to the outer-western suburb of Seven Hills. At age 15, Moran left Grantham High School to start a career as a chef. While still at school, he worked on weekends in the kitchen of the Parramatta RSL Club. He commenced his apprenticeship at La Belle Helene Restaurant, Roseville, on Sydney's North Shore, and it was here that Moran practiced the art of classical French cooking. Vincent Fantauzzo (born 1977, Manchester, England), is a Melbourne-based Australian portrait artist known for his award winning portraits of Heath Ledger, Brandon Walters, Matt Moran, Emma Hack, Baz Luhrmann, Asher Keddie and his son Luca. David Walsh (art Collector)
David Dominic Walsh (born 1961) is an Australian professional gambler, art collector and businessman. He is the owner of the Museum of Old and New Art (MONA) and Moorilla Estate. Background Walsh grew up in a Roman Catholic family in the Glenorchy district of Hobart, Tasmania, Australia, the youngest of three children. He attended Dominic College, and the University of Tasmania, where he briefly studied mathematics and computer science in 1979. Walsh made his fortune by developing a gambling system used to bet on horse racing and other sports. Walsh describes himself as a "rabid atheist".
