Archibald Prize
The Archibald Prize is an Australian portraiture art prize for painting, generally seen as the most prestigious portrait prize in Australia. It was first awarded in 1921 after the receipt of a bequest from J. F. Archibald, J. F. Archibald, the editor of ''The Bulletin (Australian periodical), The Bulletin'' who died in 1919. It is administered by the trustees of the Art Gallery of New South Wales and awarded for "the best portrait, preferentially of some man or woman distinguished in Art, Letters, Science or Politics, painted by an artist resident in Australia during the twelve months preceding the date fixed by the trustees for sending in the pictures". The Archibald Prize has been awarded annually since 1921 (with two exceptions) and since July 2015 the prize has been Australian dollar, AU$100,000. Tim Storrier
Tim Storrier AM (born 13 February 1949, Sydney) is an Australian artist who won the 2012 Doug Moran National Portrait Prize with ''The Lunar Savant'', a portrait of fellow artist McLean Edwards. Tim won the 2012 Archibald Prize for a 'faceless' self-portrait entitled ''The Histrionic Wayfarer (after Bosch)''. His win proved a controversial choice by the judges. Storrier noted in the accompanying Art Gallery of New South Wales (AGNSW) text "It refers to a painting by Hieronymus Bosch called '' The Wayfarer'' painted in c. 1510 where the figure is believed to be choosing a path or possibly the prodigal son returning ... Nigel Milsom
Nigel Milsom is an Australian painter. Early life Milsom was born in 1975 in the southern New South Wales city of Albury. He completed a Bachelor of Arts (Visual Arts) at the University of Newcastle in 1998, and then undertook postgraduate studies at the College of Fine Arts of the University of New South Wales, gaining a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Honours) in 1999 and a Master of Fine Arts in 2002. Milsom worked at the Art Gallery of New South Wales in the early 2000s as a Gallery Services officer and credits this experience as another part of his art education. In 2014, Milsom was convicted and sentenced to a maximum six-and-a-half years imprisonment for the April 2012 armed robbery, while under the influence of drugs and alcohol, of a 7-Eleven in Glebe, an inner neighbourhood of Sydney. Andrew Upton
Andrew Upton (born 1 February 1966) is an Australian playwright, screenwriter and director. He has adapted the works of Gorky, Chekhov, Ibsen and others for London's Royal National Theatre and the Sydney Theatre Company. He wrote the original play ''Riflemind'' (2007), which premiered at the Sydney Theatre Company to favourable reviews, with Hugo Weaving starring and Philip Seymour Hoffmann directing the London production. Upton and wife Cate Blanchett are the co-founders of the film production company, Dirty Films, under which Upton served as a producer for the Australian film '' Little Fish'' (2005). Upton and Blanchett became joint artistic directors of the Sydney Theatre Company from 2008 until 2012. Alexander McKenzie (artist)
Alexander McKenzie (born 1971 in Sydney) is an Australian contemporary artist. Biography The son of Scottish migrants, McKenzie knew he would become a painter from the earliest years and had his own purpose-built art studio at home from the age of eleven. After starting out at City Art Institute, now called (COFA) University of New South Wales College of Fine Arts, he dropped out, citing that he wasn't interested in exploring many other disciplines, he just wanted to get on with painting. Shortly after leaving City Art Institute he won the Brett Whiteley Scholarship to study at the Julian Ashton Art School, graduating in 1994. Between 1995 and 2002 he studied and travelled throughout England, Ireland, France, Scotland and Italy.
