The following is a list of American films released in 1953 in film, 1953. Donald O'Connor and Fredric March cohosted the 26th Academy Awards ceremony on March 25, 1954, held at the RKO Pantages Theatre in Hollywood, Los Angeles, Hollywood. This was the second year in which the ceremony was telecast, with viewership at an estimated 43,000,000. The winner in the Best Motion Picture category was Columbia Pictures, Columbia's ''From Here to Eternity''. All of the major-category winners were black-and-white films. The 11th Golden Globe Awards also honored the best films of 1953. There was no award for Best Picture in either the Musical or Comedy categories. Spencer Tracy won the Golden Globe for Best Actor in a drama film for ''The Actress'', while David Niven won Best Actor in the Musical or Comedy genre for ''The Moon Is Blue (film), The Moon Is Blue.'' Call Me Madam (film)
''Call Me Madam'' is a 1953 American Technicolor musical film directed by Walter Lang, with songs by Irving Berlin, based on the 1950 stage musical of the same name. The film, with a screenplay by Arthur Sheekman, starred Ethel Merman, Donald O'Connor, Vera-Ellen, Billy DeWolfe, George Sanders, and Walter Slezak. The film replaced "Washington Square Dance" with the older " International Rag", and interpolated "What Chance Have I With Love?" from Berlin's ''Louisiana Purchase'' (sung and danced by Donald O'Connor). A soundtrack album was released by Decca both as a 10-inch LP and as a set of three 7-inch EPs, and was released on CD in 2004 by Hallmark. The numbers "The Hostess with the Mostest'" and " You're Just in Love" are included on the Rhino Records CD set ''Irving Berlin in Hollywood''. United Artists Corporation (UA), currently doing business as United Artists Digital Studios, is an American digital production company. Founded in 1919 by D. W. Evelyn Keyes
Evelyn Louise Keyes (November 20, 1916 – July 4, 2008) was an American film actress. She is best known for her role as Suellen O'Hara in the 1939 film ''Gone with the Wind''. Early life Evelyn Keyes was born in Port Arthur, Texas, to Omar Dow Keyes and Maude Ollive Keyes, the daughter of a Methodist minister. After Omar Keyes died when she was three years old, Keyes moved with her mother to Atlanta, Georgia, where they lived with her grandparents. As a teenager, Keyes took dancing lessons and performed for local clubs such as the Daughters of the Confederacy. Film career A chorus girl by age 18, Keyes came out to Hollywood and was introduced to Cecil B. DeMille who in her own words “signed me to a personal contract without even making a test”. John Payne (actor)
John Howard Payne (May 23, 1912 – December 6, 1989) was an American film actor who is mainly remembered from film noir crime stories and 20th Century Fox musical films, and for his leading roles in ''Miracle on 34th Street'' and the NBC Western television series ''The Restless Gun''. Early life Payne was born in Roanoke, Virginia. His mother, Ida Hope (''née'' Schaeffer), a singer, graduated from the Virginia Seminary in Roanoke and married George Washington Payne, a developer in Roanoke. They lived at Fort Lewis, an antebellum mansion that became a state historic property, but was destroyed by fire in the late 1940s. Payne attended prep school at Mercersburg Academy in Mercersburg, Pennsylvania, and then went to Roanoke College in Salem, Virginia. Phil Karlson (born Philip N. Karlstein; July 2, 1908 – December 12, 1982) was an American film director. Film noir (; ) is a cinematic term used primarily to describe stylish Hollywood crime dramas, particularly those that emphasize cynical attitudes and motivations.
