Arnold Daly
Arnold Daly (October 22, 1875 – January 13, 1927) was an American actor, playwright, and producer. He was the father of actress and Algonquin Round Table personality Blyth Daly. Biography He was born Peter Christopher Arnold Daly in Brooklyn, New York, the son of Irish parents Joseph J. Daly and Mary Arnold. His father was an importer of wood for use in cabinet construction. After being expelled from four public schools, he finally left parochial school following the death of his father in 1886. He made his first appearance as an actor in ''The Jolly Squire'', 1892. During his career he claimed credit for a hundred plays, although many were either adapted from foreign plays or written by his brother Joseph. He was noted for introducing the early Shaw plays to American audiences, including '' Candida'', ''Mrs. Warren's Profession'' and '' You Can Never Tell''. Ashley Miller (director)
Ashley Miller (August 11, 1877 – November 19, 1949) was an American director, screenwriter, playwright, and actor. He directed 133 films between 1909 and 1923. Miller was born in Cincinnati and attended schools in Detroit, Michigan. Miller's stage debut came in September 1904 when he portrayed Francois in a production of ''Richelieu''. He went on to act with stock theater companies in Boston, Chicago, New York, and Philadelphia. Plays in which he performed include ''Prince Otto'', ''Romeo and Juliet'', ''A Midsummer Night's Dream'', ''My Lady Peggy Goes to Town'', and '' The Parisian Model''. His roles in the latter two productions were singing parts. Miller formed a troupe that presented plays in New York City's schools and settlement houses. He also worked as a director of silent films for the Edison Biograph Studio. ''An Affair of Three Nations'' is a 1915 American silent film directed by Arnold Daly and Ashley Miller, and produced by Pathé Frères Films. It is based on a story by John T. McIntyre. The film was the first in the "Ashton-Kirk, Investigator" series, and was followed by '' The Menace of the Mute''. It stars Arnold Daly, Sheldon Lewis, William Harrigan, Charles Laite, Charles Krauss, George Melville and Louise Rutter. As with a lot of silent films, it is not known whether the film currently survives. Plot Arnold Daly plays the part of Ashton Kirk, a wealthy and scholarly young man who solves mysteries that have the police puzzled. Kirk is asked by Stella Morse, (Louise Rutter), to find out who is threatening her uncle, Dr. Morse (Sheldon Lewis). Metro Pictures Corporation was a Film, motion picture production company founded in early 1915 in Jacksonville, Florida. It was a forerunner of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. The company produced its films in New York, Los Angeles, and sometimes at leased facilities in Fort Lee, New Jersey, Fort Lee, New Jersey. It was purchased in 1919. History Metro Pictures was founded as a film distribution company in February 1915 by a number of "exchange men" with Richard A. Rowland as president, George Grombacher as vice-president and Louis B. Mayer as secretary. Grombacher owned exchanges in Portland and Seattle. Rowland and Metro's 2nd vice president James B. Clark were from the Roland & Clark company based in Pittsburgh. Lowell J. Sherman (October 11, 1888 – December 28, 1934) was an American actor and film director. In an unusual practice for the time, he served as both actor and director on several films in the early 1930s. He later turned exclusively to directing. Having scored huge successes directing the films ''She Done Him Wrong'' (starring Mae West) and ''Morning Glory (1933 film), Morning Glory'' (which won Katharine Hepburn her first Academy Award), he was at the height of his career when he died after a brief illness. ''Always in the Way'' is a 1915 American silent drama film directed by J. Searle Dawley and starring Mary Miles Minter. The film, which was inspired by the song of the same name by Charles K. Harris, was partially filmed in the Bahamas. As with many of Minter's features, the film is thought to be a lost film. Plot As described in film magazines, Winfred North, a widower, marries a widow with two children, believing this will be best for his five-year-old daughter, Dorothy. When her step-mother discovers that Dorothy is to inherit the entirety of her father's fortune, she passes her off as an orphan, and has her adopted by a missionary couple who take the little girl to Africa. Now aged fifteen, Dorothy is aiding her adoptive father Revered Goodwin in his missionary work, when she meets Robert Armstrong, a prospector, and they become sweethearts. Essanay Studios
The Essanay Film Manufacturing Company was an early American motion picture studio. The studio was founded in 1907 in Chicago, and later developed an additional film lot in Niles Canyon, California. Its various stars included Francis X. Bushman, Gloria Swanson and studio co-owner, actor and director, Broncho Billy Anderson. It is probably best known today for its series of Charlie Chaplin comedies from 1915-1916. In the late 1916 it merged with other studios and stopped issuing films in the fall of 1918. According to film historian Steve Massa, Essanay is one of the important early studios, with comedies as a particular strength. Founding The studio was founded in 1907 in Chicago by George K. Ruth Stonehouse
Ruth Stonehouse (September 28, 1892 – May 12, 1941) was an actress and film director during the silent film era. Her stage career started at the age of eight as a dancer in Arizona shows. Early life Ruth Stonehouse was born to James Wesley Stonehouse and Georgia C. Worster on September 28, 1892, in Denver, Colorado. Her father was the founder of Stonehouse Signs Inc. According to the 1900 Census for Laurence Town, Teller County, Colorado, she lived with her father, James, a sign writer, and her grandmother, Eda Stonehouse, along with her sister, Hazel, who was a year younger. By 1910, she was living with her mother, Georgia Stonehouse, a stenographer, and her sister, Hazel, in Chicago, Illinois. Curiously, her mother lists herself as a widow on the 1910 Census, while James Stonehouse can be found residing in Arizona. Bryant Washburn
Franklin Bryant Washburn III (April 28, 1889 – April 30, 1963) was an American film actor who appeared in more than 370 films between 1911 and 1947. Washburn's parents were Franklin Bryant Washburn II and Metha Catherine Johnson Washburn. He attended Lake View High School in Chicago. Washburn's early acting experience came in stock theater. He debuted in film in 1911 with Essanay Studios. He quickly became a comedy star after appearing in films such as ''Skinner's Baby'' and ''Skinner's Dress Suit'' in 1917. His second marriage was to actress Virginia Vance. They had a child together. He died from a heart attack in Hollywood. His interment was located in Culver City, California's Holy Cross Cemetery. His son, Bryant Washburn, Jr. (1915–1960), was also an actor, a major in the US Air Force Reserve, served during World War II and Korea, and predeceased him.
