Albanians
The Albanians (; sq, Shqiptarët ) are an ethnic group and nation native to the Balkan Peninsula who share a common Albanian ancestry, culture, history and language. They primarily live in Albania, Kosovo, North Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia as well as in Croatia, Greece, Italy and Turkey. They also constitute a large diaspora with several communities established across Europe, the Americas and Oceania. Albanians have Paleo-Balkanic origins. Exclusively attributing these origins to the Illyrians, Thracians or other Paleo-Balkan people is still a matter of debate among historians and ethnologists. The first certain reference to Albanians as an ethnic group comes from 11th century chronicler Michael Attaleiates who describes them as living in the theme of Dyrrhachium. Kristaq Rama
Kristaq Rama (193230 July 1998) was an Albanian sculptor, art educator and a member of the Communist Party in Albania under Enver Hoxha's rule. He was the father of current Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama. Early life and education He was born in Durrës to Vlash Rama and Veronika Kolombi, sister of Zef Kolombi. Rama graduated from the Artistic Lyceum "Jordan Misja", in the Department of Fine Arts in 1951, and three years later left Albania to study in Leningrad, Soviet Union. Career After graduation, he returned to Albania, where he worked in Tirana, primarily as superintendent of fine arts at the Albanian Ministry of Culture, and at the same time taught as an external lecturer at the Higher Institute of Arts of Tirana. Helidon Xhixha
Helidon Xhixha is a contemporary artist born in Durrës, Albania, in December 1970. Xhixha is known for his stainless steel sculptures, which is often fused with other mediums such as marble or brass. Early life and education Born into a family of artists, Xhixha inherited his interest for the Fine Arts and passion for sculpting from his father, whom among other things, was a state portraitist for the Albanian government. Following secondary school he first attended and graduated from the Academy of Arts in Tirana, where he was a part of a rising period for Albanian art. He then moved to Italy, where he attended the Brera Art Academy of Milan in 1991. In 1998 Xhixha was awarded a scholarship to Kingston University, London, where he developed techniques in engraving, sculpting and photography. Saimir Strati
Saimir Strati (born 1966) is an Albanian mosaic artist. Strati was born in Tirana, Albania. He began his career doing restorations in Albania to several mosaics at the archeological sites of Byllis, Amantia and Apollonia. He is a member of the British Association of Modern Mosaic. Vasiliev Nini (born 1954 in Gjirokastra, Albania) is an Albanian-born American sculptor who lives in Columbus, Ohio. In 1979, he graduated with distinction from the Academy of Arts, Branch of Monumental Sculpture, in Tirana, Albania. Since 2 July 2007, he has lived in United States. He sculpts in a variety of materials such as marble, granite, stone, wood, bronze, metal and chrome but is not limited according to his visions and variably to different textures, medias and colors. Nexhmedin Zajmi
Nexhmedin Zajmi (4 March 1916 19 May 1991) was an Albanian painter and sculptor. Early life and education He was born in a village close to Trebisht, Peshkopi. Zajmi studied at the Qemal Stafa High School in Tirana and in 1931 he graduated in agriculture from the technical school in Tirana, where he discovered his artistic talents. The next phase of his education took place at art school, where he studied with sculptor Odhise Paskali. In 1939, he went to study at the Academy of Fine Arts of Rome, in Rome, Italy, where he obtained his diploma in 1943. During the following year he remained in Italy, returning to Albania towards the end of 1944. Kolë Idromeno
Nikoll Idromeno (; 15 August 186012 December 1939), better known as Kolë Idromeno, was an Albanian painter, sculptor, architect, photographer, cinematographer, composer and engineer during the Albanian Renaissance in the nineteenth century. He is widely regarded as a precursor of both realism and landscape art in Albania. Kolë Idromeno was born in Shkodër, which was at that time part of the Ottoman Empire. At age 16, he moved to Venice for six months and began his studies at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Venezia. Subsequently, he travelled throughout Europe and moved back to Shkodër and worked essentially in a variety of artistic fields. Kristina Koljaka
Kristina Koljaka (Hoshi) (6 June 1915 – 21 October 2005) was an Albanian sculptor and one of the first women to achieve success in sculpture in Albania. Early life Kristina Koljaka was born on June 6, 1915, in the city of Kavajë, west-central Albania to Jani Koljaka, an intellectual who was fluent in 12 foreign languages and Angja Petro Bidoshi. She was the second eldest of the couple's seven children. Kristina fell in love with art in her early youth and her parents cultivated this passion by providing her with professional artistic training in neighboring Italy. Sadik Kaceli
Sadik Kaceli (14 March 1914 – 24 December 2000) was an Albanian artist. He studied in Paris at the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts (1936–1941). Kaceli is one of Albania's best known painters, receiving many decorations as People's Artist of Albania and the Honour Citizen of Tirana medal. He created the first series of the Albanian lek. In 2016 Sadik Kaceli was given thHonour of Nation Order. He is one of the founders of the National Art Gallery of Albania, designed the first version of the Albanian lek, and made the People's Republic of Albania Coat of Arms.
