Air America (formerly Air America Radio and Air America Media) was an radio in the United States, American radio network specializing in progressive talk radio. It was on the air from March 2004 to January 2010. The network was founded as a left wing alternative to counter talk radio with a right wing perspective. Air America featured programs with monologues by on-air personalities, guest interviews, call-ins from listeners, and news reports. Several shows had million plus audiences, and multiple weekday presenters continued on in radio, television, or politics after their time on Air America. For example, in 2008, ''The Thom Hartmann Program'' had 1.5–2 million unique listeners a week and ''Lionel (radio personality), The Lionel Show'' had 1.5–1.75 million unique listeners a week. Hartmann, Randi Rhodes, and Mike Malloy later had shows on other radio networks. WDJZ (1590 AM) is a radio station that serves the Daytona Beach area. Most recently, the station had an urban gospel and progressive talk format targeted toward the African American community. It is owned by Glenn Cherry. History The station went on air in 1957 under the call letters WDAT as a country-western station. Its call letters changed to WELE in 1959, and its format changed to a black music format in 1963 before going back to country by 1967. In 1981, the station took on new call letters WZIP and became an oldies station before returning to country in 1986. In 1988, a group of investors who were graduates of the historically black Morehouse College bought WZIP, and the station call letters changed to WPUL and format changed to urban contemporary. WPCO (1230 AM, "94.9 The Palm") was a radio station in Columbia, South Carolina. Last owned by Alpha Media, it broadcast an adult album alternative (AAA) format. Its studios were on Pineview Road in Columbia, with a transmitter tower located near Bicentennial Park along the Congaree River in downtown Columbia. It was also heard on FM translator W235CH at 94.9 MHz, using the translator's dial position as its moniker, "94.9 The Palm." (South Carolina is known as the Palmetto State.) After going silent in January 2022, WPCO's license was cancelled and deleted by the FCC on January 5, 2023. WVAX (1450 AM) is a sports formatted broadcast radio station licensed to Charlottesville, Virginia, serving Charlottesville and Albemarle County, Virginia. WVAX is owned and operated by the Charlottesville Radio Group subsidiary of Saga Communications. History WVAX is Charlottesville's newest AM station. The initial construction permit was applied for in January 2004 by Anderson Communications LLC, owned by Charles M. Anderson of Bowling Green, Kentucky, who holds separate interests in several FM stations in that state. The construction permit was granted in September 2005, and by the end of the month Anderson sold it to Saga Communications for $150,000. Saga put the station on the air on January 20, 2006 with a progressive talk format from Air America. Air America ceased national programming in January 2010, precipitating format changes at many of its affiliates. WCHL is a radio station based in Chapel Hill, North Carolina broadcasting on 1360 AM, with a translator on 97.9 FM. It is an affiliate of CBS News Radio. Much of its programming is geared towards the Chapel Hill/Carrboro community, with a focus on local news and community-affairs programming. History Chapel Hill's oldest continuous broadcaster signed on January 25, 1953 under the ownership of Sandy McClamroch, who went on to become the town's longest-serving mayor. Originally a 1,000-watt station, the station boosted its daytime power to 5,000 watts in 1978. The station is owned by the Monadnock Broadcasting Group subsidiary of Saga Communications and licensed to Saga Communications of New England, LLC.
