African American fraternities and sororities are social organizations that predominantly recruit Black college students and provide a network that includes both undergraduate and alumni members. These organizations were typically founded by Black American undergraduate students, faculty and leaders at various institutions in the United States. African Americans (also referred to as Black Americans and Afro-Americans) are an ethnic group consisting of Americans with partial or total ancestry from sub-Saharan Africa. MALIK Fraternity Inc. previously known as 'Malik Sigma Psi" is a college fraternity founded on May 13, 1977 at CW Post in Long Island University for men of color. Rather than refer to themselves as being black Greeks, they prefer African Fraternalists. It was founded on September 19, 1963, at Morgan State University (then Morgan State College) in Baltimore, Maryland, and is currently the 5th largest Black Greek Lettered Fraternity. Wine Psi Phi is an African American fraternity. It was founded in 1959 under the name HUMS at Howard University and had the motto of We Initiate New Experiences In 1962 the name was changed to W.I.N.E. Psi Phi. It arose out of the social activism of the 1960s during the Civil Rights Movement. It also came about as an alternative to many traditional black Greek letter organizations. Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. () is a List of African-American fraternities, historically African American Fraternities and sororities, fraternity. It was founded at Howard University in Washington, D.C. on January 9, 1914, by three young African-American male students with nine other Howard students as charter members. The Improved Benevolent Protective Order of Elks of the World (IBPOEW) is an African-American fraternal order modeled on the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks. Sigma Pi Phi (), also known as The Boulé, founded in 1904, is the oldest fraternity for African Americans among those named with Greek letters. The fraternity does not have collegiate chapters and is designed for professionals at mid-career or older. Sigma Pi Phi was founded in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The fraternity quickly established chapters (referred to as "member boulés") in Chicago, Illinois and then Baltimore, Maryland. The founders included two doctors, a dentist and a pharmacist.
