This is a list of African-American newspapers that have been published in the U.S. State of Colorado. It includes both current and historical newspapers. Many of the historical newspapers were published in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, when the number of African Americans in Colorado rose from 1,163 in 1870 to 11,453 in 1910. Colorado's first African-American newspaper may have been the '' Denver Weekly Star'', which was in circulation by 1881. Notable newspapers in Colorado today include the ''Denver Weekly News'', the ''Denver Urban Spectrum'', and the ''African-American Voice'' of Colorado Springs. Franklins Paper The Statesman 1906-06-08
Franklins was an Australian discount supermarket chain selling packaged groceries and perishables throughout New South Wales, Australia, New South Wales, Queensland, Victoria (state), Victoria and South Australia. It sold the "No Frills" home brand generic products. In 2011 the chain was bought by Metcash and the stores were sold off, shut down or converted into new supermarket banners or other brands. The final store closed in April 2015. History Beginnings (1941–1978) In 1941, Franklins was established in Sydney by Frank Lindstrom. It was his second supermarket chain, having sold his first one to Woolworths Limited, Woolworths. In 1954, Franklins was acquired by Harold Cornock and Norman Tieck. Under their leadership it grew to cover much of New South Wales, and created a reputation for low prices. The Colorado Statesman (African American)
''The Colorado Statesman'' was a weekly political newspaper published in Denver and was one of the oldest continuously published newspapers in Colorado. ''The Statesman'' covered the Colorado General Assembly, state government, public policy issues, campaigns and elections, the state’s political parties, and the people and personalities behind them. It was formerly known as the ''Denver Democrat'' and ''The Colorado Democrat''. The paper was succeeded to the name, ''Colorado Politics'' in 2017. History It was founded in 1889. This is a list of African-American newspapers that have been published in the state of Nebraska. Most African American publishing has been concentrated in the city of Omaha, which was home to about half of the state's African-American population in the 19th century, and 70-80% in the 20th century. Some have also been published in Lincoln, home to a much smaller African American community. The state's first known African-American newspaper was the short-lived ''Western Post'' of Hastings, founded in 1876. The first commercially successful newspapers were established in the 1890s. This is a list of African-American newspapers that have been published in the state of Kansas. It includes both current and historical newspapers. Although abolitionist newspapers were published in Kansas as early as 1854, the first Kansas newspaper published by and for African Americans was the ''Colored Radical'', published briefly at Lawrence and Leavenworth in 1876. With resurgent white supremacy in the South and the end of the Reconstruction era after 1876, westward emigration of African Americans from the South increased greatly, and African-American newspapers blossomed across the state through 1920. Trinidad, Colorado
Trinidad is the home rule municipality that is the county seat and the most populous municipality of Las Animas County, Colorado, United States. The population was 8,329 as of the 2020 census. Trinidad lies north of Raton, New Mexico, and south of Denver. It is on the historic Santa Fe Trail. History Early Trinidad was first explored by Spanish and Mexican traders, who liked its proximity to the Santa Fe Trail. It was founded in 1862 soon after coal was discovered in the region. This led to an influx of immigrants eager to capitalize on this natural resource. By the late 1860s, the town had about 1,200 residents. Trinidad was officially incorporated in 1876, just a few months before Colorado became a state. International Order Of Twelve Knights And Daughters Of Tabor
The International Order of Twelve Knights and Daughters of Tabor is an African-American fraternal organization best known as the sponsor of the Taborian Hospital. It was founded as the International Order of Twelve in 1846 as an antislavery society. The Order was re-organized in 1872 as a fraternal organization in Independence, Missouri. The new leader of the group was Moses Dickson, a clergyman of the African Methodist Episcopal Church. In the 1890s the group claimed to have 100,000 members in thirty US states, the West Indies, England and Africa. Men's lodges were called "Temples" and women's lodges were "Tabernacles". There were also juvenile lodges of the order called "Tents". Male and female junior members were known as Pages of Honor and Maid, respectively. La Junta, Colorado
La Junta is a home rule municipality in , the county seat of, and the most populous municipality of Otero County, Colorado, United States. The city population was 7,322 at the 2020 United States Census. La Junta is located on the Arkansas River in southeastern Colorado east of Pueblo. History La Junta (Spanish for "the junction") was named for the fact it rested at the intersection of the Santa Fe Trail and a pioneer road to Pueblo.
