Road Designation
A route (or road) number, designation or abbreviation is an identifying numeric (or alphanumeric) designation assigned by a highway authority to a particular stretch of roadway to distinguish it from other routes and, in many cases, also to indicate its classification (e.g. motorway, primary route, regional road, etc.), general geographical location (in zonal numbering systems) and/or orientation (north-south v. east-west). The numbers chosen may be used solely for internal administrative purposes; however, in most cases they are also displayed on roadside signage and indicated on maps. Use of letters Letters are often used in road designations to indicate a class of roadways. Within such a class, roads are distinguished from each other by a road number. The Rheintal/Walgau Autobahn (A14) is a motorway in the Austrian state of Vorarlberg. It begins directly after the German Bundesautobahn 96 at the German-Austrian border near Hörbranz, passes through the Pfändertunnel past Bregenz into the Rhine Valley, through the Ambergtunnel past Feldkirch into the Walgau and ends at Bludenz, becoming the Arlberg Schnellstraße (S16). Until 2006, the official name of the A14 was only ''Rheintal Autobahn''. In Vorarlberg, the name ''Rheintal Autobahn'' was only used for the part of the A14 in the Rhine Valley (i.e. the route Hörbranz-Feldkirch), while the part located in the Walgau (Feldkirch-Bludenz) was unofficially referred to as the ''Walgau Autobahn''. The autoroute A14 is an autoroute in the western suburbs of Paris, France. It connects the business district of La Défense, at Nanterre (Hauts-de-Seine), to Orgeval (Yvelines) where it joins the A13. Its operation is managed by the Sanef group. History The motorway starts at La Défense in Hauts-de-Seine and ends at Orgeval in Yvelines. The A14 was built to relieve the congested A13 between Paris and Normandy. The A14, opened in 1996, is operated by the Société des Autoroutes de Paris Normandie. The motorway is in length and is subject to a toll. The A14 serves no localities between La Défense and Orgeval and is only a relief road of the A13. A motorway exit near Saint-Germain-en-Laye were planned but were denied by the French president, François Mitterrand, after mayors wanted to prevent excessive car use in the Forest of Saint-Germain-en-Laye. A 14 Motorway (Germany)
is an autobahn in eastern Germany. The route comprises two disconnected sections: * The old A 241. A North-South route in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern which runs from Wismar to Schwerin. * The original A 14. A West-East route which starts at the A 2 near Magdeburg in Saxony-Anhalt and terminates at the A 4 at Dresden in Saxony. On the way, it serves Halle and Leipzig.
