Captain (Gaelic Games)
A captain of a Gaelic games team, sometimes known as a ''skipper'', is a player who, during the course of a match as well as before and after it, has several additional roles and responsibilities over and above those of his teammates. Tradition means that some teams rotate the captaincy annually, though others may adopt a permanent captain. As well as being an onfield leader, a captain takes the coin toss and raises the trophy when this is the game's prize. Responsibilities The captain leads the team out onto the pitch. Before the start of a match, a coin toss between captains of the opposing teams is used to determine which end of the ground each team will kick to. Ahead of the All-Ireland final, the captain is the first member of the team to shake the hand of dignitaries who may be attending the game, for example the president of the GAA or the president of Ireland. All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship 1957
The 1957 All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship was the 71st staging of the All-Ireland hurling championship since its establishment by the Gaelic Athletic Association in 1887. The championship began on 14 April 1957 and ended on 1 September 1957. Wexford were the defending champions, however, they were defeated in the provincial campaign. Kilkenny won the All-Ireland following a 4-10 to 3-12 defeat of Waterford. Rule changes Prior to the start of the championship the Galway county board put down a motion at the Gaelic Athletic Association's (GAA) annual congress seeking immediate entry to the Leinster championship. Since 1922 Galway's hurlers had no competition in the Connacht championship and, as a result, they gained automatic entry to the All-Ireland semi-final every year. Billy Rackard
Billy Rackard (14 April 1930 – 23 March 2009) was an Irish hurler and Gaelic footballer who played as a centre-back for the Wexford senior teams. Regarded as one of Wexford's greatest players of all-time, Rackard made his first appearance for the team during the 1949–50 National League and was a regular member of the starting fifteen until his retirement before the 1964 championship. During that time he won three All-Ireland medals, six Leinster medals and two National Hurling League medals. Rackard was an All-Ireland runner-up on three occasions. At club level Rackard was a five-time county club championship medalist with Rathnure. Rackard's brothers, Nicky and Bobby, also experienced All-Ireland success with Wexford. Playing career Club Rackard played his club hurling with Rathnure and enjoyed much success in a lengthy career. Faythe Harriers
Faythe Harriers is a Gaelic Athletic Association club located in Wexford town, Ireland. History The history of the Faythe Harriers stretches back to the early 1940s, although the hurling club wasn't formed until 1949. In the late 1930s, the Mulgannon Harriers were the G.A.A. standard-bearers in the south end of Wexford town before they disbanded. In 1941, when a football street league was started in Wexford, John Murphy, Kevin Nolan, Jimmy Williams and a few others got together and decided to enter a team. They had no jerseys, so they approached the members of the Mulgannon Harriers committee for a loan of theirs. They said that they could on condition that they use another name. John Murphy, who was later to lead the club as Chairman, suggested the name "Faythe Harriers." Both of these clubs only played football, as hurling wasn’t played much in Wexford town at the time. Ned Wheeler
Ned Wheeler (8 May 1932 – 6 June 2019) was an Irish hurler who played for Wexford Senior Championship club Faythe Harriers. He played for the Wexford senior hurling team for 16 years, during which time he usually lined out at midfield but was also deployed at full-forward. A master of the overhead stroke, his blonde hair and long, sweeping strides made him a cult hero of Wexford hurling. Wheeler began his hurling career at club level with St Martin's. At 16 years of age he experienced his first success when the club won the 1948 Wexford Junior Championship title. He later captained the club to the Wexford Minor Championship in 1950. Wheeler later transferred to the Faythe Harriers club, with whom he won Wexford Senior Championship medals in 1960, 1962 and 1965. At inter-county level, Wheeler joined the Wexford senior team as a 17-year-old in 1949. The championship began on 12 April 1959 and ended on 4 October 1959. The championship was won by Waterford who secured the title following a 3-12 to 1-10 defeat of Kilkenny in the All-Ireland final. This was their second All-Ireland title, their first in eleven championship seasons. It remains their last All-Ireland triumph.
