Stoll Pictures
Stoll Pictures was a British film production and distribution company of the silent era, founded in April 1918. Background During the early to mid-1920s it was the largest film company in Britain and one of the biggest in Europe. Its major domestic rival was the Ideal Film Company. Stoll's films were primarily made at its Cricklewood Studios, although the smaller Surbiton Studios were also used during the early years of the company's existence. The company takes its name from its founder Sir Oswald Stoll, better known today as a theatre owner. Stoll produced a series of expensive films during the early 1920s such as ''The Four Feathers'' and '' The Prodigal Son'' at a cost of £37,000 was at the time the most expensive British production ever. ''The Lure of Crooning Water'' is a 1920 British silent comedy romance film directed by Arthur Rooke and starring Guy Newall, Ivy Duke and Hugh Buckler. It is adapted from a novel by Marion Hill and was one of several rural romances directed by Rooke. At least one copy of the film survives. Plot The film tells the story of Georgette Verlaine (Duke), a stage actress who is persuaded by Dr. John Longden (Buckler), who loves her, to recuperate in the countryside as her lifestyle is ruining her health. She stays at a place called "Crooning Water" with Horace Dornblazer (Newall), his wife Rachel (Dibley), and their three children. The only man not captivated by her is Horace, prompting her to try and win his admiration. When she succeeds, she returns to London, pursued by Horace who has left his family. Sinclair Hill (10 June 1896 – 6 March 1945) was a British film director, film producer, producer and screenwriter. He directed nearly fifty films between 1920 and 1939. He was born as George Sinclair-Hill in London in 1894. He was awarded an OBE for his services to film. Hill was employed by Stoll Pictures in the 1920s and Gainsborough Pictures in the 1930s. ''The Flame'' is a 1920 British silent romance film directed by Floyd Martin Thornton and starring Evelyn Boucher, Reginald Fox and Dora De Winton. It was based on a novel by Olive Wadsley. Plot As summarized in a film publication, Toni (Boucher) and her brother Fane (Thatcher) were adopted after the death of their father by their Uncle Charles (Cullin), and brought from the slums to the uncle's beautiful home, much to the disgust of the uncle's wife Lady Henrietta (De Winton). Frank Poole Dyall (3 February 1870– 8 May 1950), professionally known as Franklin Dyall, was an English actor. In his early years he was a member of the companies of the actor-managers George Alexander, Ben Greet, John Martin-Harvey and Johnston Forbes-Robertson. During a 50-year stage career he played a wide range of parts in plays from Shakespeare to modern comedy, grand guignol, swashbuckling costume drama and the works of Ibsen. He broadcast on radio and television and made more than 20 films. He was the father of the actor Valentine Dyall.
