Guianan Cock-of-the-rock (Rupicola Rupicola) Iwokrama (16674569850)
The Guianan cock-of-the-rock (''Rupicola rupicola'') is a species of cotinga, a passerine bird from South America. It is about in length and weighs about . It is found in tropical rainforests, near its preferred habitat of rocky outcrops. The female's plumage is brownish / dark smokey grey in colour, and generally less noticeable than the males because of their nesting work in rocky areas. The male's feathers are a bright orange. Both have a heavy body, broad-based bill and wear a remarkable half-moon crest on the head. It is one of two species of the genus '' Rupicola'', the other being the Andean cock-of-the-rock. The Guianan cock-of-the-rock lives across the forested region of northeastern South America. Its diet consists mostly of fruit, but they sometimes feast on small snakes and lizards. Kaieteur National Park
Kaieteur National Park is a national park located in the Potaro-Siparuni Region of Guyana. The Park's boundaries and purpose are defined in the Kaieteur National Park Act, and was created to preserve the natural scenery (including Kaieteur Falls), and its fauna and flora. There are organisms that are unique to this park and cannot be found anywhere else in the world. Of these organisms include the Anomaloglossus beebei, which is a frog that only inhabits the Brocchinia micrantha within this park and no where else in the world. The Act is administered by the Kaieteur National Park Commission. It is usually considered the country's only national park, as the capital's National Park is a not a wilderness reserve. Iwokrama Forest
The Iwokrama Forest is a nature reserve of central Guyana located in the heart of the Guiana Shield, one of the four last pristine tropical forests in the world ( Congo, New Guinea, and the Amazon rainforest are the others). It represents an important transition zone in rainfall, landforms, human histories and biological communities. At its widest, the area is , and the greatest extent in a north-south direction is 80 km (50 mi). The Georgetown–Lethem Road dissects the forest, traversing about between the northeastern and southern boundaries. The forest lies between 4° and 5° north latitude and 58.5 and 59.5 degrees west longitude. Kanashen
The Kanashen (or Konashen) Community Owned Conservation (COCA) is Guyana's first community-owned area that is legally protected; it is primarily inhabited by the Wai-Wai indigenous group. Kanashen houses the headwaters of the Essequibo River, Guyana's principal water source, and encompasses the southern portion of its watershed, which drains the Kassikaityu, Kamoa, Sipu and Chodikar rivers. The main mountains are the Wassarai, Yahore, Komoa and Kaiawakua, with elevations up to about 1200 metres above sea level. Kanuku Mountains
The Kanuku Mountains are a group of mountains in Guyana, located in the Upper Takutu-Upper Essequibo region. The name means 'forest' in the Wapishana language, a reference to the rich diversity of wildlife found there. The Eastern Kanuku Mountains and the Western Kanuku Mountains are separated by the Rupununi River. In 2011, the mountains were designated National Protected Area. History The lowland forests sustain 53% of all the known bird species in Guyana, and about 70% of all mammals found in Guyana, live in the Kanuku Mountains. Shell Beach, Guyana
Shell Beach, located on the Atlantic Ocean, Atlantic coast of Guyana in the Barima-Waini Region, near the Venezuelan border, is a nesting site for four of the eight sea turtle species - the Green sea turtle, Green, Hawksbill sea turtle, Hawksbill turtleill, Leatherback sea turtle, Leatherback and the Olive ridley sea turtle, Olive Ridley. Shell Beach extends for approximately 120 km. Guyana Botanical Gardens is a tropical botanical garden in Georgetown, Guyana. It is next to the Guyana Zoo and Castellani House. Guyana National Park
Guyana National Park (normally simply the National Park) is an urban park in Georgetown, Guyana and was opened with Queen Elizabeth II. in attendance and was formerly named Queen Elizabeth II National Park in honour of her state visit. Despite its name of " national park", it is not a natural reserve. It was built on a former golf club. Description There is a circular road that is popular with joggers and other city dwellers looking to exercise. In the north of the park, there is a pond with captive manatees. There are also some in the Botanical Gardens several blocks to the south. The Children’s Millennium Monument was unveiled in the park in 2000. Guyana Zoo
Guyana Zoo (officially Guyana Zoological Park) is a zoo located in Georgetown, the capital of Guyana. The zoo officially opened in 1952, but its grounds had been used as botanical gardens since 1895. Some of its most popular attractions are harpy eagles and manatees. As of 2005, the zoo had approximately 25 staff. History In 1877, the government voted to establish a botanical garden, bringing in John Frederick Waby from the UK who spent the next 35 years in landscaping Guyana's gardens. The gardens feature tropical flowers and palms, including the national flower, the Victoria Regia Lily. Interest in creating a zoo is traced back to 1880, but it wasn't until 1952 when the zoo was opened. The zoo features endemic as well as endangered animals of Guyana.
