By-election
A by-election, also known as a special election in the United States and the Philippines, a bye-election in Ireland, a bypoll in India, or a Zimni election (Urdu: ضمنی انتخاب, supplementary election) in Pakistan, is an election used to fill an office that has become vacant between general elections. A vacancy may arise as a result of an incumbent dying or resigning, or when the incumbent becomes ineligible to continue in office (because of a recall, election or appointment to a prohibited dual mandate, criminal conviction, or failure to maintain a minimum attendance), or when an election is invalidated by voting irregularities. In some cases a vacancy may be filled without a by-election or the office may be left vacant. Queen's University Of Belfast (Northern Ireland Parliament Constituency)
Queen's University of Belfast was a university constituency of the Parliament of Northern Ireland from 1921 until 1969. It returned four MPs, using proportional representation by means of the single transferable vote. In 1969 the constituency was abolished under the reforms carried out by the Prime Minister of Northern Ireland Terence O'Neill. Franchise The constituency was created by the Government of Ireland Act 1920 and its four MPs were elected by the graduates of Queen's University of Belfast. Second Dáil In May 1921, Dáil Éireann, the parliament of the self-declared Irish Republic run by Sinn Féin, passed a resolution declaring that elections to the House of Commons of Northern Ireland and the House of Commons of Southern Ireland would be used as the election for the Second Dáil. Norman Stronge
Sir Charles Norman Lockhart Stronge, 8th Baronet, MC, PC, JP (23 July 1894 – 21 January 1981) was a senior Ulster Unionist Party politician in Northern Ireland. Before his involvement in politics, he fought in the First World War as a junior officer in the British Army. He fought in the Battle of the Somme in 1916 and was awarded the Military Cross. His positions after the war included Speaker of the House of Commons of Northern Ireland for twenty-three years. He was shot and killed (aged 86), along with his son, James (aged 48), by the Provisional Irish Republican Army in 1981 at Tynan Abbey, their home, which was burnt to the ground during the attack. Mid Armagh (Northern Ireland Parliament Constituency)
Mid Armagh was a constituency of the Parliament of Northern Ireland. Boundaries Mid Armagh was a county constituency comprising the south central part of County Armagh. It was created when the House of Commons (Method of Voting and Redistribution of Seats) Act (Northern Ireland) 1929 introduced first-past-the-post elections throughout Northern Ireland. Mid Armagh was created by the division of Armagh into four new constituencies. The constituency survived unchanged, returning one member of Parliament, until the Parliament of Northern Ireland was temporarily suspended in 1972, and then formally abolished in 1973. George Boyle Hanna
George Boyle Hanna, KC (17 December 1877 – 30 October 1938) was a Northern Irish barrister, unionist politician and county court judge. He was born at Linen Hall Street in Ballymena, County Antrim, the son of auctioneer Robert Hanna and Mary Jane Kennedy. He was educated at Gracehill Academy, Ballymena Academy and Trinity College, Dublin and was first admitted as a solicitor in 1901, being called to the Bar in 1920, taking silk as a King's Counsel in 1933. He was a member of Antrim County Council from 1908 to 1921. From 1919 until 1922, he was the independent Unionist Member of the UK Parliament for East Antrim, narrowly beating an official Unionist candidate in a by-election, but standing down at the 1922 general election. Larne was a single-member county constituency of the Parliament of Northern Ireland. Boundaries and boundary changes This was a division of County Antrim. Before 1929, it was part of the seven-member Antrim constituency. The constituency sent one MP to the House of Commons of Northern Ireland from 1929 until the Parliament was temporarily suspended in 1972, and then formally abolished in 1973. In terms of the then local government areas the constituency in 1929 comprised parts of the rural districts of Antrim, Ballymena and Larne. Patrick Maxwell (politician)
Paddy Maxwell (12 March 1909 – 15 December 1991) was a solicitor and a nationalist politician in Ireland. Maxwell studied at the Convent of Mercy School, the Christian Brothers' School and St Columb's College. In 1934, he was elected to the City Council for the Nationalist Party, holding his seat until 1946, and became Chairman of the Derry Catholic Registration Association. Foyle (Northern Ireland Parliament Constituency)
Foyle was a single member constituency in the Parliament of Northern Ireland. It was created in 1929 as one of the five single-member constituencies replacing the former five-member Londonderry constituency. The constituency continued in existence until the Parliament was temporarily suspended in 1972, and then formally abolished in 1973. Thomas Moles
Thomas Moles (13 November 1871 – 3 February 1937) was a journalist and Ulster Unionist politician. Life Born in Belfast in 1871, Moles was the son of Edward Moles and Margaret née Carson and was educated at the Collegiate School, Ballymena. A journalist by profession, he was Leader Writer for the ''Belfast Telegraph'' from 1909 until 1924 and managing editor for that newspaper from 1924. Moles was an Irish representative on the British press visit to Canada in 1911. He was a member of the Secretariat to the Irish Convention from 1917 to 1918. Moles was MP for Belfast Ormeau 1918–1922 and Belfast South at Westminster from 1922 until he retired in 1929. He was also an MP in the Northern Ireland House of Commons from 1921 to 1929 for South Belfast and for Belfast, Ballynafeigh from 1929 to his death in 1937.
