Melvin Carter (politician)
Melvin Whitfield Carter III (born January 8, 1979) is an American politician who has served as mayor of Saint Paul, Minnesota, since 2018. Elected to his first term in 2017 and reelected in 2021, Carter is the 55th mayor of St. Paul and its first African American mayor. Early life and education Carter was born in St. Paul's Rondo Neighborhood. He is the son of Melvin Whitfield Carter Jr., a retired Saint Paul police officer, and Toni Carter, a Ramsey County commissioner. Carter is a fourth-generation Saint Paul resident. He participated in the University of Minnesota Talented Youth in Mathematics Program (UMTYMP) in junior high and high school, and graduated from Saint Paul Central High School. Carter earned a bachelor's degree in business administration from Florida A&M University. During his time there, he became a brother of Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity. Frank Beecher Doran (1839—1914) was a Republican politician and the 24th mayor of Saint Paul, Minnesota, holding office between 1896 and 1898. Early life Doran was born in Batavia, Illinois on May 1, 1839, to Solomon B. and Mercy (née Wilson) Doran. He had a younger brother, John. When he was 7, his family moved to McHenry County, Illinois, where he lived for the majority of his life, the only exception being his enlistment in the military. In August 1861, not long after graduating from Clark Seminary in Aurora, Illinois and taking a job at the railroad offices, he joined the 52nd Illinois Infantry Regiment to fight in the American Civil War. He only served a year before being honorably discharged due to injuries. While traveling to aid his injured brother just a few months later, however, he was captured by Confederate soldiers and imprisoned. Edmund Rice (February 14, 1819 – July 11, 1889) was an American politician. Rice served in the U.S. Congress in Minnesota's 4th District from March 4, 1887, to March 3, 1889. Early life Edmund Rice, Jr. was born in Waitsfield, Vermont on February 14, 1819, to Edmund Rice and Ellen (Durkee) Rice, ethnic English whose ancestors had been in New England since the 17th century. He moved to Kalamazoo, Michigan, in November 1838 to study law. He was appointed registrar of the court of chancery in 1841. He was admitted to the bar association in 1842 and commenced practice in Kalamazoo, Michigan. He was appointed master in chancery in 1845. Rice enlisted to serve in the Mexican–American War in 1847 and was commissioned first lieutenant of Company A, First Regiment, Michigan Volunteers. He was the younger brother of Henry Mower Rice. William Dawson (mayor)
William Dawson (born in Ireland), was mayor of Saint Paul, Minnesota, United States, from 1878 to 1881. He was born in County Cavan, Ireland on October 1, 1825. He was a successful banker. When he was elected as mayor, he became the first mayor to be Irish in Saint Paul. He died on February 19, 1901. He died poor after his Bank of Minnesota failed five years before he died.
