This is a list of people who have been VJs on MTV, the music video channel in the U.S. and around the world. Originally hired to represent a wide array of musical tastes and personal ethnicities, VJs eventually became famous in their own right. Initially, they were nothing more than on-air personalities, but as the popularity of MTV grew, they began to branch out past just introducing music clips. Soon, they were considered by many to be full-fledged music journalists, interviewing major music celebrities and hosting their own television shows on the channel. MTV News
MTV News is the news production division of MTV. The service is available in the US with localized versions on MTV's global network. In February 2016, MTV Networks confirmed it would refresh the MTV News brand in 2016, to compete with the likes of BuzzFeed and Vice (magazine), ''Vice'', however by mid-2017 MTV News was significantly downsized due to cutbacks. MTV News content is available from respective MTV websites, Mobile apps, Apps, YouTube and on-air. In November 2018, MTV News began producing daily updates on Twitter titled ''MTV News: You Need To Know''. Now titled ''MTV News'' ''Need To Know,'' the show has evolved to a digital series that covers trending topics from pop culture to social justice issues to electoral politics and beyond. VJ (media Personality)
A video jockey (abbreviated VJ or sometimes veejay) is an announcer or host who introduces music videos and live performances on commercial music television channels such as MTV, VH1, MuchMusic and Channel V. Origins The term "video jockey" comes from the term "disc jockey", "DJ" ("deejay") as used in radio. Music Television (MTV) popularized the term in the 1980s (see List of MTV VJs). The MTV founders got their idea for their VJ host personalities from studying Merrill Aldighieri's club. Aldighieri worked in the New York City nightclub Hurrah, which was the first to make a video installation as a prominent featured component of the club's design with multiple monitors hanging over the bar and dance floor. When Hurrah invited Aldighieri to show her experimental film, she asked if she could develop a video to complement the DJ music so that then her film would become part of a club ambiance and not be seen as a break in the evening. Kim Stolz
Kimberly Lynn Stolz (born June 8, 1983) is an American fashion model, television personality, author, and financial executive. Stolz was a correspondent for MTV News, and served as video jockey and host for ''The Freshmen'', an emerging artist show on mtvU. Stolz first came to fame as a contestant on Cycle 5 of ''America's Next Top Model'', where she finished fifth place. , she is an executive with BofA Securities. Alison Stewart
Alison Stewart (born July 4, 1966) is an American journalist and author. Stewart first gained widespread visibility as a political correspondent for MTV News in the 1990s. Early life and education Stewart was born in Glen Ridge, New Jersey. Stewart attended Brown University, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and American literature. She began her broadcasting career there, where she was the music director for the school's radio station, WBRU. Career 20th century In 1988 Stewart began her career as an assistant at MTV. In 1991, she joined MTV News as a segment producer when she was hired by MTV News Director Linda Corradina. Tabitha Soren
Tabitha Soren (born August 19, 1967) is an American fine art photographer and former reporter for MTV News, ABC News and NBC News. Early career As a 19-year-old college student at NYU, Soren appeared in the 1987 music video for " (You Gotta) Fight for Your Right (to Party)" by the Beastie Boys. At the age of 23, she was the face of MTV's ''Choose or Lose'' campaign, which focused on encouraging young adults to vote. The campaign received a Peabody Award in May, 1992. Heather Parry (born 1971) is an American television and film producer. She is best known for ''Pixels'' (2015), ''The House Bunny'' (2008), and '' A Star Is Born'' (2018). SuChin Pak ( ko, 박수진, born August 15, 1976) is a South Korean-born American television news correspondent and podcaster, best known from her early days working for MTV News. She joined MTV News as a correspondent in May 2001. Life and career Born in Seoul, South Korea, Pak immigrated along with her parents to California when she was five years old. She grew up in Union City, California, a suburb southeast of San Francisco. Her parents own a small restaurant in downtown Oakland, California. Pak never planned on a career in television.
