Following is a list of justices of the Supreme Court of Hawaii. Current justices Past justices From October 8, 1840, to January 15, 1848, the court was known as the Supreme Court of the Kingdom of Hawaii. *This early Supreme Court was head by the King, the Kuhina Nui, and four other chiefs elected by the representative body to serve as Judges. The four judges of the Supreme Court were not associate justices but served that capacity as assistants to the chief justice, i.e. the King. From January 15, 1848, to December 6, 1852, it was known as the Superior Court of the Kingdom of Hawaii. From December 6, 1852, to January 17, 1893, it was known as the Supreme Court of the Kingdom of Hawaii. Supreme Court Of Hawaii
The Supreme Court of Hawaii is the highest court of the Hawaii, State of Hawaii in the United States. Its decisions are binding on all other courts of the Hawaii State Judiciary. The principal purpose of the Supreme Court is to review the decisions of the trial courts in which appeals have been granted. Appeals are decided by the members of the Supreme Court based on written records and in some cases may grant oral arguments in the main Supreme Court chamber. Like its mainland United States counterparts, the Supreme Court does not take evidence and uses only evidence provided in previous trials. Albert Francis Judd (1838–1900)
Albert Francis Judd (January 7, 1838 – May 20, 1900) was a judge of the Kingdom of Hawaii who served as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court through its transition into part of the United States. Life Judd was born January 7, 1838, at what was known as the "Old Mission Home" in Honolulu. His father was the physician and statesman Gerrit P. Judd (1803–1873) and mother was Laura Fish Judd (1804–1872). On his father's side, he was a descendant of Thomas Hastings who came from the East Anglia region of England to the Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1634. Judd attended Punahou School (founded by his father), and two years of study under William DeWitt Alexander 1858–1860. After graduating from Yale in 1862, he received a law degree from Harvard Law School in 1864. Career He served in the army of the Kingdom from 1866 to 1871 rising to the rank of captain. Alexander George Morison Robertson
Alexander George Morison Robertson (September 3, 1867 – August 21, 1947) was chief justice of the Supreme Court of Hawaii from March 9, 1911 to January 1, 1918. Robertson was the son of George Morison Robertson, "a distinguished associate justice of the Hawaii Supreme Court", and Robertson "maintained family tradition as an outstanding jurist". On February 9, 1888, Robertson became a second lieutenant in the Honolulu Rifles division, later becoming a captain of the Hawaiian Volunteers, First Battalion. From August 12, 1893 Robertson became a District Magistrate in Honolulu, serving in this capacity until May 29, 1894. In 1894, he became Deputy Attorney General of the Republic of Hawaii, and "was a delegate to the Hawaiian Constitutional Convention and served as a member of Governor Dole's staff". William Austin Whiting
William Austin Whiting (August 5, 1855 – January 18, 1908) was an American lawyer and politician of the Kingdom, Republic, and Territory of Hawaii. He served as Attorney General of Hawaii and was an associate justice of the Supreme Court of Hawaii. During his college years, he was captain of the 1875 Harvard Crimson football team. Life and career Whiting was born August 5, 1855, in Charlestown, Massachusetts. His ancestors included Massachusetts colonial governors Thomas Dudley and Simon Bradstreet, and Reverend John Cotton. He became a sixth generation Harvard College graduate, and served as captain of the 1875 Harvard Crimson football team. After graduating Harvard, he became a lawyer and practiced in Boston and Charlestown. Whiting resettled in the Hawaiian Islands in 1880 where his uncle James W. Abraham Fornander
Abraham Fornander (November 4, 1812 – November 1, 1887) was a Swedish-born emigrant who became an important journalist, judge, and ethnologist in Hawaii. Early life and education Fornander was born in Öland, Sweden on November 4, 1812, to Anders (1778–1828) and Karin Fornander (1788–1872). His education was under his father, a local clergyman, except for the years 1822–1823 when he studied Latin, Greek, and Hebrew at gymnasium in Kalmar. His mother's surname was spelled Foenander, so his surname is sometimes spelled that way. In 1828, he began studying theology at the University of Uppsala, transferring in 1830 to the University of Lund. In 1831, he left university to attend to his family, which had fallen under hard times. While providing for his family, he fell in love with his mother's youngest sister, who was four years his senior.
