Italo Disco
Italo disco (variously capitalized, and sometimes hyphenated as Italo-disco) is a music genre which originated in Italy in the late 1970s and was mainly produced in the early 1980s. Italo disco evolved from the then-current underground dance, pop, and electronic music, both domestic and foreign (American hi-NRG, French Euro disco) and developed into a diverse genre. The genre employs electronic drums, drum machines, synthesizers, and occasionally vocoders. It is usually sung in English, and to a lesser extent in Italian and Spanish. The origin of the genre's name is strongly tied to marketing efforts of the ZYX record label, which began licensing and marketing the music outside Italy in 1982. Italo disco faded in the early 1990s and then split into many genres (Eurobeat, Italo house, Italo dance). Den Harrow
Stefano Zandri (born 4 June 1962), known by his stage name Den Harrow, is an Italian singer and model. The name Den Harrow was conceived by producers Roberto Turatti and Miki Chieregato, who based it on the Italian word ''denaro'' (money). Career Den Harrow became popular in the late 1980s at the height of the Italo disco genre. He scored several hits during that period; one of his best known songs is "Don't Break My Heart" from 1987. Revelation After years of fame and popularity, it was revealed by frontman Stefano Zandri and his producers that Zandri did not actually sing any of the songs credited to Den Harrow; he was essentially a character who lip-synched to vocals recorded by a number of other singers. Giampiero Scalamogna (13 June 1943 – 3 July 2010), best known as Gepy & Gepy, was an Italian singer, songwriter, producer and arranger. For his powerful voice and robust physique he was often compared to Barry White and Demis Roussos. Background Born in Rome, Scalamogna debuted in 1965, when he founded the duo ''Dany & Gepy'' with Daniela Casa, and shortly after started his solo career as ''Gepy & Gepy''. In the 1970s he produced Ornella Vanoni with whom he had a successful duet song, "Più". At the end of the 1970s he focused on the disco dance genre, composing and performing songs such as "Body to Body" (opening theme of the RAI TV-show ''Discoring'') and "Blu". Paul Mazzolini (born 18 February 1960), known by his stage name Gazebo, is an Italian singer, songwriter, musician and record producer best known for his italo disco music style during the 1980s. His song "I Like Chopin" reached No. 1 in more than 15 countries, and his debut single " Masterpiece" was also an international success. Early life Mazzolini was born in Beirut, Lebanon, where his father was working as a diplomat in the Italian embassy. Through his father's work, he later lived in Jordan, Denmark (where he learned English at an American school) and France. He also worked as a guitarist in London for some time. Fun Fun are an Italian Italo disco band formed in 1983. Their hits included "Colour My Love" and "Baila Bolero". History Producers Dario Raimondi and Alvaro Ugolini teamed up with studio vocalists Antonella Pepe, Angela Parisi and Ivana Spagna to create Fun Fun, a band with a bouncy, high-energy, dancefloor-friendly sound. Their first release, 1983's "Happy Station", was successful in Italy and other parts of Europe thanks to several extended mixes, including the most well-known "Scratch" version. "Happy Station" reached the number one spot in the South African charts. It was also popular in the Chicago House Dance scene and was played by DJs on WBMX. Francesco Puccioni (26 April 1961 – 30 January 2009), better known under his stage name Mike Francis, was an Italian singer and composer, born in Florence, Italy. Internationally, he was best known for his 1984 hit, "Survivor", and his collaborations with American singer Amii Stewart. Manfred Alois Segieth (born 7 July 1946), known by his stage name Fancy, is a German singer, songwriter, musician and record producer. Early life Manfred Alois Segieth was born on 7 July 1946 in Munich. Fancy started playing guitar at the age of twelve. While attending a boarding school where the enjoyment of worldly music was not allowed, he had to secretly listen to the pop records of artists such as Ted Herold and Peter Kraus. At age 14, he switched to the humanistic high school in Munich. During and after high school, he worked in various bands as a guitarist and bass player, though he mainly performed as a singer. Fake (Swedish Band)
Fake was a Swedish synthpop band during the 1980s. History Fake was formed when two Swedish musicians, Erik Strömblad and Stefan Bogstedt, founded their own band, then called Size 46, in 1977. The band grew over the next few years, with metal drummer Stefan Sverin and singers Tony Wilhelmsson and Ulrika Örn being added to the lineup, and with more synthesizers added to their rock music sound. Stefan Sverin moved on as a session drummer for various acts such as American actor Cliff Taylor and Claes Muncktell from Dave and the Mistakes. He has since gave up drumming and is now working as an Art Director in Stockholm. The group's second single, "Donna Rouge", was a major hit in Italy and the remix became a disco classic. Tony Esposito (musician)
Antonio Esposito (born 15 July 1950) is an Italian singer, songwriter and musician. Career Esposito was born in Naples. He started playing percussions in his teenage years. In the early 1970s, he played sessions and recorded with musicians such as Alan Sorrenti, Don Cherry, Don Moye, Gato Barbieri, Eumir Deodato, Brian Auger, Gilberto Gil and Pino Daniele. In 1975 he recorded his first solo album, ''Rosso napoletano'', in collaboration with Paul Buckmaster. Esposito is mostly well known for his 1984 hit single " Kalimba de Luna" from his album ''Il grande esploratore''. After winning the Un disco per l'estate music festival, it charted in Italy and Switzerland, and a cover by Boney M reached No. 17 in Germany.
