Adams Mine
Adams Mine is an abandoned mine, abandoned open pit mining, open pit iron ore mine located in the Boston Township, Ontario, Boston Township of the District of Timiskaming, south of Kirkland Lake in the Provinces and territories of Canada, Canadian province of Ontario. It is situated on the Canadian Shield. History The mine was originally discovered in 1906 however there was little interest in iron ore as a result of the discovery of gold in the Porcupine and Kirkland Lake regions. The site saw renewed interest in the second half of the 1950s and was subsequently developed by the Jones and Laughlin Steel Corp of Pittsburgh Pennsylvania with first production in 1964. The Jones and Laughlin company operated the mine until 1971 when it was sold to Dofasco Steel of Hamilton Ontario. The mine was operated in tandem with the Dofasco owned Sherman Mine. The mine closed in 1990 when the economically retrievable ore reserves were exhausted. The closure also made the Sherman Mine unecon ...

The Iron Mine, Port Henry, New York
''The Iron Mine, Port Henry, New York'' () is a painting by Homer Dodge Martin in the collection of the Smithsonian American Art Museum and measures 30 1/8 x 50 in. (76.5 x 127.0 cm.). The mine was in Craig Harbor near Port Henry, New York. After being loaded into barges the ore was taken to the nearby blast furnaces of the Bay State Iron Mine Company, and made into rails for railroads. "Painted during the Civil War, Martin's canvas quietly asserted the primacy of the North, whose strength lay in its natural resources and manufacturing." The nearby hills were "one of the largest iron deposits in the country and the home of dozens of the 19th century's most important iron-producing communities in America." The Iron Center Museum in Port Henry specializes in this history. Craig Harbor's iron ore contained "65.23 percent metallic iron and was "extremely tough, and difficult to reduce to a state of sufficient fineness for the forge." North of this location, at Ore Bed Harbor n ...

Rouchleau Mine
The Rouchleau Mine is an abandoned open-pit mine within the Mesabi Iron Range at Virginia, Minnesota, United States. The mine, located on the east side of the city, is roughly long and wide; its deepest point is below its surface, making it one of the deepest mines in the range. Named for Louis Rouchleau, who explored the area for its mining potential, the mine was initially created as a shaft mine. It was converted to a pit mine by the 1930s due to improvements in open-pit mining technology and increasingly unstable terrain which made shaft mining unsafe. Ten companies have overseen mining operations at the Rouchleau Mine since it began operating in 1893. The majority owner has always been either present owner U.S. Steel or one of the firm's predecessors. The mine has produced 300 million gross tons of iron ore since it opened; it was last mined in 1977. Since its closure, the mine became part of Mineview in the Sky, a local tourist attraction. Mineview in the Sky featured a ...

Operation Drilling began for the mine's , concrete-lined vertical shaft in 1918 a few miles south of the Tennessee Coal, Iron and Railroad Company's Muscoda mines. The Slope mining, slope mines built near the ridge of Red Mountain (Birmingham, Alabama), Red Mountain were depleting the most accessible parts of the Clinton formation ore seams. Portsmouth Mine Pit Lake
Portsmouth Mine Pit Lake, sometimes called the Portsmouth Pit, is the deepest lake completely within the state of Minnesota, USA. It has a depth of over 450 feet (137 m), according to the most recent Minnesota DNR data. Lake Superior, over 700 feet deep off the north shore of the state, is technically deeper. The artificial lake is a former iron mining pit in the Cuyuna Range that has since filled with water. It is part of the Cuyuna Country State Recreation Area, located in Crow Wing County. The lake is within Crosby city limits. The Minnesota DNR has repeatedly stocked the lake with brook and rainbow trout. On August 19, 1957, the mine pit, then not yet filled with water, was launch site for a big stratospheric balloon, the second flight of the Air Force's Project Manhigh Project Manhigh was a pre-Space Age military project that took men in balloons to the middle layers of the stratosphere, funded as an aero-medical research program, though seen by its design ...

Paulson Mine
The Paulson Mine is a former iron ore mine located in Cook County, Minnesota, United States, 53 kilometres north-west of Grand Marais, Minnesota near the end of the historic Gunflint Trail. The Port Arthur, Duluth and Western Railway was built to the mine in 1892 to access the ore, but both the mine and railway failed. Early history The existence of iron bearing rocks in the Gunflint Lake area was first mentioned as early as 1850. Eventually these deposits would be linked to the famous Mesabi Iron Range and this eastern portion which extended into Ontario became known as the Gunflint Range. Conclusive evidence of the quality of iron in the area would not come until 1886 when Grand Marais pioneer Hazael "Henry" Mayhew made discoveries at the western end of the lake. This then attracted the attention of investors in the state capital. In late 1886 an enterprise known as the American Realty Company was incorporated in Minnesota. Several of its promoters had ties to the recently esta ...

Lake Vermilion-Soudan Underground Mine State Park
The Lake Vermilion-Soudan Underground Mine State Park is a Minnesota state park at the site of the Soudan Underground Mine, on the south shore of Lake Vermilion, in the Vermilion Range (Minnesota). The mine is known as Minnesota's oldest, deepest, and richest iron mine, and now hosts the Soudan Underground Laboratory. As the Soudan Iron Mine, it has been designated a U.S. National Historic Landmark. History In the late 19th century, prospectors searching for gold in northern Minnesota discovered extremely rich veins of hematite at this site, often containing more than 65% iron. An open pit mine began operation in 1882, and moved to underground mining by 1900 for safety reasons. From 1901 until the end of active mining in 1962, the Soudan Mine was owned by the United States Steel Corporation's Oliver Iron Mining division. By 1912 the mine was at a depth of 1,250 feet (381 m). When the mine closed, level 27 was being developed at 2,341 feet (713.5 m) below the surface and the e ...

Jackson Mine
The Jackson Mine is an open pit iron mine in Negaunee, Michigan, extracting resources from the Marquette Iron Range. The first iron mine in the Lake Superior region, Jackson Mine was designated as a Michigan State Historic Site in 1956 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1971. The Lake Superior Mining Institute said, the mine "is attractive in the iron ore region of Michigan and the entire Lake Superior region, because of the fact it was here that the first discovery of iron ore was made, here the first mining was done, and from its ore the first iron was manufactured." Multiple other mines soon followed the Jackson's lead, establishing the foundation of the economy of the entire region. The mine is located northwest of intersection of Business M-28 and Cornish Town Road. Origin (1844–1847) In 1844, government surveyor Douglass Houghton tasked his deputy, William A.
