San Giljan
Saint Julian's ( mt, San Ġiljan) is a town in the Central Region of Malta. As of 2020, its registered number of inhabitants stands at 13,792. It is situated along the coast, north of the country's capital, Valletta. It is known for tourism-oriented businesses, such as hotels, restaurants and nightclubs which are centred mainly in an area known as Paceville. Etymology, feast and traditions The town is named after its patron saint; Saint Julian who is widely known as Julian the Hospitaller and Julian the Poor whereby he is the patron saint of hunters. Before the reform to the Calendar of Saints, the memorial to St Julian was on 27 January. Caterina Scappi
Caterina Scappi (died 20 June 1643) was a rich and well-respected benefactor of the Carmelite church in Malta. Little is known about her origins or early life, but she is known for the substantial charitable donations for women's causes. In particular, she founded the first hospital in Malta dedicated exclusively to women. Early life Originally from Siena, Italy, from where she got her nickname "La Senese", Scappi spent a lot of her life in Malta. Scappi was an active businesswoman, from which she may have acquired some of her fortune. Her birth place, year of birth, and filiation are unknown, and she never mentions them in any of the notorial contracts or wills she wrote. The first mention of Caterina Scappi in Malta comes from a criminal court record from 1583-4, in which Scappi testifies in a robbery case. St Philip's Hospital
St Philip's Hospital is a former 100-bedded capacity hospital located in Santa Venera, Malta. It has been closed since 2012. History A letter of intent approving the set up of a private hospital was issued by the Government of Malta in 1992. A year later in 1993, the company owning the hospital, Golden Shepherd Ltd, was registered. It was owned by Frank Portelli. Construction of the hospital was completed and it was opened in 1995. Financial difficulties and closure The private hospital closed its doors in 2012 after running into financial problems. According to the last set of accounts filed with the Registry of Companies for 2006, the company running it reported a loss of more than €500,000. It was subsequently put up for sale. St James Capua Hospital
St James Capua Hospital, or Saint James Hospital Sliema, started out in 1996 as the Capua Palace Hospital. In 2002 it was taken over by the Saint James Hospital Group, which owns other hospitals in Malta, Libya and Hungary. It is an 80 bed unit in Sliema, Malta. The hospital occupies part of the former "Capua Palace" building (Palazzo Capua), built over 200 years ago. It is a private hospital offering a very broad range of services, and is very strong in the field of obstetrics and infertility work. Leonardo di ser Piero da Vinci (15 April 14522 May 1519) was an Italian polymath of the High Renaissance who was active as a painter, draughtsman, engineer, scientist, theorist, sculptor, and architect. Il-Kalkara
Kalkara ( mt, Il-Kalkara) is a village in the South Eastern Region of Malta, with a population of 3,014 as of March 2014. The name is derived from the Latin word for Lime (material), lime (Calce), and it is believed that there was a lime kiln present there since Roman times. Kalkara forms part of the inner harbour area and occupies the area around Kalkara Creek. The town has its own Local Council and is bordered by the cities of Birgu and Żabbar, as well as the town of Xgħajra. History The village of Kalkara developed as a small fishing community around the sheltered inlet of Kalkara Creek. RNH Bighi
Royal Naval Hospital Bighi (RNH Bighi) also known as Bighi Hospital, was a major naval hospital located in the small town of Kalkara on the island of Malta. It was built on the site of the gardens of Palazzo Bichi, that was periodically known as Palazzo Salvatore. RNH Bighi served the eastern Mediterranean in the 19th and 20th centuries and, in conjunction with the RN Hospital at Mtarfa, contributed to the nursing and medical care of casualties whenever hostilities occurred in the Mediterranean. L-Imtarfa
Mtarfa ( mt, L-Imtarfa) is a small town in the Northern Region of Malta, with a population of 2,572 as of March 2014. It was considered to be a suburb of Rabat until 2000, when it became a separate local council. History A number of historic silos were discovered in Mtarfa in October 1973. In the Roman period, Mtarfa was a suburb of Melite, and it contained a Temple of Proserpina. The ruins of the temple were destroyed in the 17th and 18th centuries and the stones were reused in other buildings. Substantial remains of the suburb itself, including the arrangement of the streets and many tombs, survived until the late 19th century. In 1890, British military barracks began to be built in Mtarfa, destroying most of the Roman remains in the process. RNH Mtarfa
The Royal Navy Hospital Mtarfa, also known as '' David Bruce Royal Naval Hospital'', is a former British naval hospital in Mtarfa, Malta. It was run by the Royal Navy from 1962; prior to this it had been run by the Army as a British Military Hospital. It closed in 1979. History On 6 January 1915, Sir Leslie Rundle, Governor and Commander-in-Chief Malta, laid the foundation stone of the new Central Services Hospital. The building was commenced on the assumption that funds would be released to build the ancillary buildings at a later stage. By April 1915, the construction of the main block of the hospital was in hand. By 31 March 1916, the sum of £17,950 had been spent, out of the provisional total of £55,000.
