List Of Ghost Towns In Oregon
According to several historians, the U.S. state of Oregon contains over 200 ghost towns, more than any other state in the country. Professor and historian Stephen Arndt has counted a total of 256 ghost towns in the state, some well known, others "really obscure." The high number of ghost towns and former communities in the state is largely due to its frontier history and the influx of pioneers who emerged in the area during the 19th century. Many of the ghost towns in Oregon were once mining or lumber camps that were abandoned after their respective industries became unprosperous. Andrews, Oregon
Andrews is a ghost town in Harney County, Oregon, United States. It is located south of Steens Mountain and near the Alvord Desert. History The community was named for Peter Andrews, who settled in the area about 1880. A post office was established on Andrews' property in 1890. The post office was moved north a short distance in 1900 and called "Wildhorse" or "Wild Horse". Locals referred to it as "Wild Hog", however, so the postmaster changed the name to honor his friend Andrews. At its peak the community had about 150 residents. However, the population of Andrews slowly declined until only one house remained. When it burned down in 1996, the community became a ghost town. In 2011, artist John Simpkins moved into the abandoned school at Andrews. He set up residence in the teacher's cottage and turned the schoolhouse into his studio. Gilliam County, Oregon
Gilliam County is one of the 36 counties in the U.S. state of Oregon. As of the 2020 census, the population was 1,995, making it the third-least populous county in Oregon. The county seat is Condon. The county was established in 1885 and is named for Cornelius Gilliam, a colonel who commanded the forces of the provisional government of Oregon after the Whitman Massacre. Airlie, Oregon
Airlie is an unincorporated community in Polk County, Oregon, United States. The community was named for David Ogilvy, 10th Earl of Airlie of Scotland, who was president of the narrow-gauge Oregonian Railway Company. Airlie was the southern terminus of the railroad. The tracks were later widened to standard gauge and the line was bought by the Southern Pacific Railroad, which removed the Airlie branch by 1929.
