List Of German Submissions For The Academy Award For Best Foreign Language Film
Germany has submitted films for the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film since the creation of the award in 1956. The award is handed out annually by the U.S.-based Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to a feature-length motion picture produced outside the United States that contains primarily non-English dialogue. Each year, the Academy invites countries to submit their best films for competition according to strict rules, with only one film being accepted from each country. However, because of Germany's status as a divided country throughout much of the second half of the 20th century, West Germany and East Germany competed separately in the Best Foreign Language Film category until 1990. ''Nowhere in Africa'' (german: Nirgendwo in Afrika) is a 2001 German drama film that was written and directed by Caroline Link. The screenplay is based on the 1995 autobiographical novel of the same name by Stefanie Zweig. ''Arms and the Man'' or ''Heroes'' (german: Helden) is a 1958 West German historical comedy film directed by Franz Peter Wirth and based on the 1894 play of the same name by George Bernard Shaw. It was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. It was also entered into the 1959 Cannes Film Festival. The film's sets were designed by the art director Hermann Warm. It was shot at the Bavaria Studios in Munich. Plot 1865: Swiss captain Bluntschli fights as mercenary in the war between Bulgaria and Serbia. 31st Academy Awards
The 31st Academy Awards ceremony was held on April 6, 1959, to honor the best films of 1958. The show's producer, Jerry Wald, started cutting numbers from the show to make sure it ran on time. He cut too much material and the ceremony ended 20 minutes early, leaving Jerry Lewis to attempt to fill in the time. Eventually, NBC cut to a re-run of a sports show. The film '' Gigi'' won nine Oscars, breaking the previous record of eight (set by ''Gone with the Wind'' and tied by ''From Here to Eternity'' and ''On the Waterfront''). It would be short-lived, however, as '' Ben-Hur'' broke the record with eleven Oscars the following year. ''The Devil Strikes at Night'' (german: Nachts, wenn der Teufel kam) is a 1957 West German film directed by Robert Siodmak. It was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film and is based on the true story of Bruno Lüdke. It is a highly fictionalized account of the hunt for serial killer Bruno Lüdke, as he murders women during the last year or two of World War II. In one of the crimes a man is arrested who is obviously innocent. An investigator who starts to get a thread which leads to the real killer is frustrated by Nazi authorities who feel that revealing the truth will undermine the people's faith in their supposedly infallible system. The detective story gradually becomes a story about the evils of political propaganda and corruption. The film's sets were designed by the art directors Gottfried Will and Rolf Zehetbauer. 29th Academy Awards
For the 29th Academy Awards, the Best International Feature Film was introduced as a competitive category, instead of only a Special Achievement Award. The first winner in this new category was Federico Fellini's ''La Strada'' with Anthony Quinn, receiving a further nomination for Best Original Screenplay. This was the first year that all of the five Best Picture nominees were in color, and the first Oscar telecast to be videotaped for later broadcast, for those network affiliates that didn't want to broadcast the event live.
