Women's Boxing
Although women have participated in boxing for almost as long as the sport has existed, female fights have been effectively outlawed for most of boxing's history until recently, with athletic commissioners refusing to sanction or issue licenses to women boxers, and most nations officially banning the sport. Reports of women entering the ring go back to the 18th century. Historical overview One of the earliest mentions of women’s boxing is in the travelogue of a German man who visited London in 1710. While taking in a men's boxing match, he met a woman in the audience who claimed to have previously boxed another woman in the same venue. Super flyweight, also referred to as junior bantamweight, is a boxing weight classes, weight class in professional boxing, contested from and up to . History The first title match in this division was in 1980, when the World Boxing Council responded to pressure from Asian and Latin American members who felt the difference between the flyweight limit and the bantamweight limit was too significant. Rafael Orono won the inaugural title in February of that year by defeating Lee Seung-hoon (boxer), Seung-Hoon Lee. The World Boxing Association followed suit in 1981 when Gustavo Ballas won the vacant title by knocking out Sok-Chul Baek. Taoriba Biniati (born 1 November 1995) is an I-Kiribati boxer. Biniati comes from Tabiteuea, an atoll in the Gilbert Islands, Kiribati, south of Tarawa. She took up boxing after Derek Andrewartha, a former police officer from Hampshire, England, advertised for a female boxer to join his club with the aim of competing at the 2014 Commonwealth Games. She is coached by Tarieta Ruata, who represented Kiribati at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi. The club's only equipment was a single punchbag which they hung from a breadfruit tree. Jemyma Betrian (born ) is a Curaçaoan-born Dutch female kickboxer and boxer, based in Oosterhout, Netherlands. She competes professionally since 2005 and is the former WBC Muay Thai Bantamweight champion and mixed martial artist. Between November 2016 and May 2018 she was ranked in the top ten pound for pound women in the world by Combat Press. As of April 2020, she is the #2 Super Bantamweight in the world by WBC Muaythai. Hellen Baleke (born 3 May 1987) is a Ugandan amateur boxer notable for being the first Ugandan woman to win a bronze medal in boxing at the 2019 All Africa Games. Alicia Ashley (born August 23, 1967) is a women's boxing participant who is the former WBC female world super bantamweight champion. Ashley is a Jamaican-American. Born in Jamaica, she moved to the United States at a young age. She is the younger sister of chess grandmaster Maurice Ashley and former world kickboxing champion Devon Ashley. Welterweight is a weight class in combat sports. Originally the term "welterweight" was used only in boxing, but other combat sports like Muay Thai, taekwondo, and mixed martial arts also use it for their own weight division system to classify the opponents. In most sports that use it, welterweight is heavier than lightweight but lighter than middleweight. Sumya Anani (born February 12, 1972) is a retired American professional female boxer nicknamed "The Island Girl." She was 5'6" and boxed as a junior welterweight. She is best known for a 1996 bout which left her opponent severely injured and may have served as an inspiration for the film ''Million Dollar Baby''.
