Architect
An architect is a person who plans, designs and oversees the construction of buildings. To practice architecture means to provide services in connection with the design of buildings and the space within the site surrounding the buildings that have human occupancy or use as their principal purpose. Etymologically, the term architect derives from the Latin ''architectus'', which derives from the Greek (''arkhi-'', chief + ''tekton'', builder), i.e., chief builder. The professional requirements for architects vary from place to place. Alar Kotli
Alar Kotli (27 August 1904 in Väike-Maarja - 4 October 1963 in Tallinn) was an Estonian architect. He studied sculpture at the art school ''Pallas'' in Tartu during 1922-1923 and mathematics at the University of Tartu. He graduated from the University of technology in Gdańsk (then Free City of Danzig) in 1927 as an architect. Among the most famous and influential Estonian architects, Kotli has created several important landmarks in Tallinn. These include the Estonian Song Festival grounds (1957-1960, with Henno Sepmann & E. Paalmann), the main building of Tallinn University (1938-1940, with Erika Nõva), the Art Fund building (1949-1953) and the administrative building in Kadriorg park (currently the residence of the president of the Republic of Estonia) in conjunction with architect Olev Siinmaa (1937-1938). Katrin Koov
Katrin Koov (born 17 April 1973) is an Estonian architect. Koov was born in Tallinn. She graduated from the Department of Architecture of the Estonian Academy of Arts in 1997. Since 2003, she has worked in the architectural bureau KAVAKAVA OÜ which she co-founded. In 2013, the Government of Estonia presented her with a cultural award for creative achievements in 2012. In 2014, she became the editor of ''Maja'', the Estonian Architectural Review. Notable works by Koov are the Concert Hall of Pärnu, the new sports arena of Pärnu and the new building of the Narva College of the University of Tartu. August Komendant
August Eduard Komendant (October 2, 1906 – September 14, 1992) was an Estonian and American structural engineer and a pioneer in the field of prestressed concrete, which can be used to build stronger and more graceful structures than normal concrete. He was born in Estonia and educated in engineering in Germany. After World War II he immigrated to the United States, where he wrote several books on structural engineering and served as a professor of architecture at the University of Pennsylvania. Komendant worked with architect Louis Kahn in a productive but contentious collaboration that lasted from 1956 until Kahn's death in 1974. His innovative work as Kahn's structural engineer helped Kahn create several architecturally significant buildings, including two that won the prestigious Twenty-five Year Award given by the American Institute of Architects. Tõnis Kimmel (born 22 January 1977 in Tallinn) is an Estonian architect. From 1984 to 1992 Tõnis Kimmel studied in the 7th Secondary School of Tallinn (today's Tallinn English College) and from 1992 to 1995 in the King Gustav Adolf's Grammar School. Raine Karp
Raine Karp (born 23 July 1939) is an Estonian architect. Raine Karp was born in Tallinn. He studied construction at the Tallinn University of Technology, Tallinn Polytechnic Institute (TPI) for two years (1957-1959) and went to study architecture in Estonian Academy of Arts, Tallinn State Institute of Applied Art (1959-1964). During the time of the Estonian SSR he worked at the SDI Eesti Kommunaalprojekt (1960-1963), the SDI Eesti Projekt (1963-1973 and 1978-1990) and the SDI Eesti Tööstusprojekt (1975-1978). After the fall of the Soviet Union, during the period when the economy and construction again recovered, Raine Karp founded his one-man architectural office in 1996.
